When I wokeup the next morning, Shane wasn’t in the room anymore, but Nick was. And so was the cat, throwing me judgmental looks from the foot of the bed.
What did you do tonight? It seemed to ask, but I didn’t have to justify myself to the cat I rescued.
My friend and roommate was a different story. “Dude,” he started when he noticed I was awake. “Why did the room smell like sex when I got in last night?”
I bit my lower lip. What to say? “I uh... jerked off?”
Nick sighed. “You totally banged my cousin, didn't you? I noticed the two of you left early, but I hoped you were just tired.”
“I was tired.” And then Shane kissed me and I wasn't so tired anymore. But I was pretty sure Nick didn't need the details. “We both were. We talked for a while and somehow one thing led to another...”
Nick rested his face in his hands. “I don't want to know how exactly it happened.”
“It was only a one night stand. You don't need to worry about it. All of you, you don't give Shane enough credit. I see all the worried looks you're shooting him and you know what? I think he's tired of being treated like he's fragile.”
“I know that he's not fragile,” Nick muttered. “I still don’t think it was the best idea you ever had.”
I shrugged. What could I do now? “It’s not theworstidea I ever had.” If there was one night of sex I could erase from my life, I sure as hell wouldn’t pick that night with Shane. “Besides, I know I’m not the only one here with a crush.” I sat up, eying my friend critically.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
I gave him a grin, glad that my distraction was working. “I saw you ogle that alpha on the dance floor last night.”
He crossed his arms in front of his chest, which healwaysdid when he was feeling defensive. I had him. “I wasn't ogling anyone,” he insisted.
“Yeah, right. No need to feel ashamed. This town has a surprising amount of good-looking alphas and we're young, omega and single...”
“You know I’m not interested in that sort of thing.”
“Not at all?” I lay back down again as the cat settled by my side.
“I think he likes you,” Nick said, nodding at the cat.
“Sure.” Who was trying to change the topic now? I glanced at the cat anyway. If Nick didn't want to talk about the alpha he'd been looking at, he didn't want to talk about it. The cat met my gaze with surprising calm, as if trying to hypnotize me.
“I think he wants to be fed.”
“Right. Breakfast might be a good idea.”
“Take a shower first.”
I raised an eyebrow at Nick. “Are you saying that I stink?”
“Dude.” He snorted. “You have alpha pheromones all over you.”
I held my elbow to my nose and sniffed myself. He was right. Shane's scent lingered on me. Until I washed it off, any alpha who crossed my path would know that I'd recently had sex with someone else. That I was spoken for. I wasn't, of course, but they wouldn't know that.
Nick eyed me with an unreadable expression on his face. “A one night stand, huh?”
“What are you trying to say?”
“You're enjoying the smell of my cousin on you a little bit too much, man.”
“Whatever.” I flipped him off and went to take a shower. He was right; I couldn't hold on to this. In a few hours, we'd be on the road again, and then I would have to leave all of it behind me.
