“Just to get the cat,” I said.
He licked his lips. “If you really want to,” he said eventually. “But you'll be the one explaining to my kids why you're taking their cat.”
I grimaced. Of course the kids would grow attached to the new pet if it stayed here for a while. “Okay, maybe I won't take it. Maybe I'll just visit it.”Can I visit? Do you want me to?
Shane seemed skeptical and Nick was clearly wondering whether I was serious as well.
“You want to fly down here to visit a cat?” My friend looked at me as if I was two notes short of a full symphony. Yeah, what I was suggestingwasridiculous.
You can't be this desperate.
“I'm kidding,” I said, hoping they believed me. I flashed Shane a smile to hide what I was thinking. “I wouldn't mind if you sent me pictures, though.”Or if you emailed me just because.I tried not to sound flirty, but judging by the way Nick groaned under his breath, I wasn't too successful.
“I'll send you pictures. Of the cat.”
I loved that he felt like he needed to add that clarification at the end.
“I'm looking forward to it.”
“Seriously, you two,” Nick muttered, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Shuddup.” I elbowed my friend. Yes, maybe I was acting like a teenage omega with a crush, but so what? We were leaving in a few hours. What harm was there if I wanted to flirt a little while I could?
For all I knew, I was never going to see Shane again after today.
That day after the wedding, I had no idea what the future held in store for us.

Shane
IwatchedKade get into the car from my place on the porch. Honestly, I was tempted to walk up to the car and kiss him. That was why I had to keep my distance. We'd had sex last night, but that was all it was. There was no point in trying to keep him.
It's too bad he's not gonna come back for the cat.
I ran a hand through my hair, trying to get rid of that thought.
Forget about it. He's not going to come back. There's nothing here for people like him.
When they drove off, I waved goodbye and tried not to feel or think anything. At least, I thought to myself, my night with Kade showed me that I was still capable of having sex with omegas who weren't Ron. I'd had no trouble performing at all. That was something, right?
Still, I had no desire to prowl the streets for more omegas now. I'd only known Kade for a short time, but something within me already knew that he was special. What happened between the two of us last night wasn't easily repeatable.
Determined to pull myself out of my funk, I rubbed my face and stepped off the porch. I had to collect my children from my mother's place. The sooner I got back to real life, the better.
As it turned out, though, Conner wasn't ready to let go of the events of the week yet. As soon as we got home and Mary went off to play with my sister, my son cornered me in the living room, eyes narrowed. For a long moment, he stood before me without saying anything.
I waited, knowing that he would speak up if I gave him time.
“You looked like you wanted to kiss him,” he said eventually.
I suppressed a sigh, knowing he was talking about that moment he dragged me off the dance floor. My kid was way too observant for his age. Heknewtoo much for his age as well. Then again, his hobbies were reading and people watching. I didn't mind that my son was smart, but it did put me in a difficult spot sometimes.
I patted the couch beside me. “Sit with me.”
He flopped down beside me, never taking his critical gaze off my face. Nine years old, and he was judging me. I still remembered the day he was born and how innocent he’d looked then, how openly he’d laughed at a few months old. And now he was nine and judging me. To be honest, I'd hoped I had a few more years before he realized his dad was only human.
“Would it be so bad if I kissed Kade?” I asked.
