“Oh, only that I’m going to spoil the hell out of you.”
He left the bedroom before I could come up with a response to that.
I let myself fall back on the bed. Sauron left the room after Shane, no doubt hoping for some food, but Max stayed in bed with me. “You’re a good boy, aren’t you?” I asked, petting his fur. It felt weird to be lying here in Shane’s house, petting his dog and waiting for breakfast. Like things were somehow goingtoowell.
But then, I still hadn’t told him about the baby. I had to do that, and soon. I glanced at my phone on the night stand, a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I hadn’t called my agent back yet either. She’d tried calling me, of course, but I’d ignored her. That was another conversation waiting to happen.
After I told Shane.
At some point.
Soon.

After Shane wentthrough all the trouble to serve me breakfast in bed (pancakes!), I figured it was only fair if I helped with lunch. Luckily, the meal Shane had planned was super easy. Homemade pizza with premade crust. I probably shouldn’t be calling that homemade, but whatever.
“Did you know pizza is like my favorite food?” I asked as I helped him sprinkle toppings on the crust. I’d picked mozzarella. Part of my pregnant taste buds thought pickles would make agreattopping, but I suppressed that urge.
“Actually I did not.” Shane finished placing strips of bacon on the pizza and stepped up to me, his arms encircling my waist from behind. “What’s your favorite topping?”
“You.” I leaned back into him and flashed him a smile.
He snorted. “Much as I’d like to take you back to bed, the kids will be here any time now.”
“Shame.” I sighed theatrically, even though I was pretty okay with that. For the moment, I enjoyed simply being near him. There was just something so domestic about preparing lunch together. But the good kind of domestic, not the kind I’d experienced back in Goldstone. “I think I like mushrooms best,” I said at the same time as Shane leaned in to kiss my neck. “Hey, I thought we didn’t have time for that.”
“Mh. We don’t.” But he didn’t stop either. Damn insatiable alpha. Not that I put up much of a fight.
By the time the front door opened, his lips had moved to my ear, and his hands had somehow found their way under my shirt.
Neither of us even heard the kids come in until Mary suddenly tried to jump onto Shane’s back. “Group hug!” she exclaimed.
We both startled and separated.
“Hey, princess,” Shane said, obviously struggling to regain his composure. Meanwhile I looked to the kitchen door where Conner stood, staring at us with an unreadable expression. The moment I met his gaze, he walked away with a huff.
Yeah, that was a kid who wasnothappy with recent developments. I tried not to sigh.
“Don’t worry about it,” Shane said to me in a low voice, holding Mary in his arms.
“Kade!” She stretched her hand out to me and I shook it. At least someone here was glad to see me.
“Hello, darling. Are you doing okay?”
“Yes!”
“Good.” I ruffled her hair. “I’ll play with you in a little bit, okay? Now I have to go talk to your brother.”
“You really don’t—” Shane started, but I stopped him.
“Yeah, I do. Don’t worry about it.” I kissed his cheek, tapped Mary’s cute little nose and left the kitchen. They could finish the pizza without me.
Conner wasn’t difficult to find. I heard barking from the backyard, so I turned that way to see him throwing sticks for Max. He glanced at me when I stepped into the backyard, but didn’t stop what he was doing. Clearly, he didn’t want to talk. Too bad for him.
“Max missed you yesterday,” I said, trying to start a conversation. “He’s a good dog.”
Conner’s eyes darted to me again as I spoke, but still he remained silent as Max carried the latest stick back to him.
