Back in the living room, I started the video over.

At first glance, Oceanport looked like any other small town I’d been through over the course of my life. Small buildings, quiet streets, people greeting each other as they walked by. With the mountains in the background it was picturesque and perfect, and that annoyed me a little bit as I sat in the passenger seat of the car Nick had rented for us at the airport. I’d come here prepared to hate this place, and so far it looked lovely as if just to spite me.

“You know not every small town is like the place you grew up in,” Nick muttered, interpreting the scowl on my face correctly.

“I know.” Where I’d grown up, omegas were still very much considered the property of their mates. Here, I didn’t see any omegas shuffling respectfully after their alphas. But I’d only been here for a few minutes, so…

“We’re almost there. My cousin’s place is down this road,” Nick said as he made a right off Main Street. “You’ll like him. He’s pretty laid back, and the kids are so cute.”

“He’s an alpha, though, right?”

“Yeah, but he’s not looking for a mate, so there’s no reason for you to feel threatened. He works as a mechanic now, but he used to run a private home care business for seniors. So… not exactly your typical alpha. We’ve been over this,” he reminded me.

“I know.” I sighed. “I don’t feel threatened. If you say he’s a good guy, he’s a good guy.” And I could defend myself if needed. I was not going to roll over for anyone ever again. Still, Nick was right. His family deserved some respect from me, so I tried to quiet my nerves as he parked by his cousin’s house.

And then his cousin stepped out of the house before Nick had even killed the engine.

I elbowed Nick. “Holy shit, you didn’t tell me he was hot.” That would have been good to know, to, uh, prepare myself mentally.

Nick laughed. “I told you you’d like him.”

“I don’t know if Ilikehim, I just think he’s hot. I mean, c’mon, look at those arms.” Nothing hotter than a pair of strong arms on a good-looking alpha. A good-looking alpha with ginger hair. Man, I had a weakness for ginger men.

“What, are you sad now that he’s not looking for a mate?”

I only scoffed in response. Most alphas were only hot until they opened their mouths, and Nick’s cousin hadn’t passed that test yet. But even if he did, I wasn’t looking to get mated ever again.

Didn’t mean that having fun was off the table, though.

Getting out of the car, I stretched. We’d been traveling for a while now, and it felt good to have arrived. When I was done making sure that all my limbs were still functional, I saw a little girl walk up to me.

Her eyes were wide, and I felt a smile tugging on my lips looking at her. “Hi,” she said somewhat shyly.

I went down on one knee to be at eye level with her. “Hi,” I replied. “I'm Kade. What's your name?”

She blushed, although I wasn't sure why. “I'm Mary.”

“That's a beautiful name.”

A bright smile took over her features. “You're beautiful too!”

My eyebrows went up, and then I had to laugh. God, this little girl was adorable. I didn't have a lot of interactions with children in my day-to-day life, but I did enjoy my time with them when the opportunity arose. There was just something so pure and simple about the way the world looked in a child's eyes. I liked getting to share that viewpoint with them, if only for a little while. “Thank you,” I told Mary. And then I got up again when her dad approached.

“Dad!” she turned around to the ginger-haired man, clearly excited. “He's pretty like in the video!”

Her dad coughed, as if he suddenly had something stuck in his throat. Meanwhile, I tried not to panic. By video, she couldn’t meanthatvideo, could she? No, she was too young to have seen my sex tape.

“Video?” I asked, trying to gauge his reaction.

“I'm sorry,” he addressed me with a genuine smile. “I'm Shane Hayes and my daughter Mary really loves to watch videos of your live performances.”

I exhaled. Not the sex tape, then. Of course not. Mary liked my songs.

Did Shane too?
