“A word?” He eyed me suspiciously, but stepped aside to let me in anyway. If I had to guess, I'd say that he didn't want anyone to overhear us, whatever was going to come out of my mouth.

“You must know who I am,” I said, following him into a spacious living room.

“You’re my husband's new lover,” he said, voice gruff.

Taking the liberty to sit on the couch, I eyed him a little more closely. He looked like a typical forty-year-old small-town alpha, with hair that was starting to gray and a belly that was starting to expand a bit from sitting on his butt too much. He didn't look like the major douchebag I knew he was. Of course not. If he did, it wouldn't be so easy for him to fool people.

Never mind that. I was here to set some things straight.

“Kade is not your husband anymore,” I said.

He barked a short laugh. “Of course he would have told you that.”

“He told me that because it's true. You're the one holding on to an illusion.” For reasons I couldn't fathom. What good was it to hang on to a marriage that had long ended? He hadn't even seen Kade inyears. At this point, he had to know that omega was never coming back.

Stubbornly, he shook his head. “Divorce is a sin.”

I scoffed. “You know what I consider a sin? Marrying a teenager when you're over thirty.”

His eyebrows drew together. “You make it sound like I'm some sort of monster. I married him so he would be in good hands. I'll have you know I waited until he was eighteen before we tried for babies.”

What? Was that supposed to make me feel better? I bit my teeth together to stop myself from giving in to the urge to punch the man in front of me. “Kade wasn't happy in your marriage and he left you. Don't you think it's time you accepted that fact and moved on?”

“I don't know what you hoped to accomplish by coming here.” he said. “My stance on this matter is firm. I took Kade as my husband, and I'm not going back on the oath I swore.”

“What if he was to be excommunicated?”

Harvey rubbed his chin. “And why would that happen?”

“Let's just say I read up on your community, and there's certain sins omegas can commit that cannot be forgiven or rectified through prayer.” I dug through my pocket to procure a copy I'd made of Kade's ultrasound picture. The picture showing our baby. I didn't want to hand it over to Harvey, but I had no other way to get a rise out of him.

“He's pregnant?” Harvey's eyebrows shot up as he eyed the black and white image. Then, predictably, his eyes narrowed on me. “I assume it's yours?”

“It's either that or Immaculate Conception. Is that a thing in your church?” I asked with a grin before I remembered that this was not the time to be cracking jokes. But thinking of my baby in Kade's belly made me inexplicably happy.

Harvey offered me a distasteful look in return. “This might be enough to get him thrown out of church,” he said after another second, returning his attention to the image. “But it would make me look more honorable if I stood by him in his time of crisis.”

Dear lord, was nothing going to sway this man?

Well, I had one more trick up my sleeve.

“You mean honorable in the same way you slept with your students?” I asked. That was the information I'd found digging around the internet. A former student had come forward and accused Harvey, and things had gone downhill for him from there. The community he lived in couldn’t ignore his sins when they were made so public. Not even his alpha status had saved him from losing his job.

“I have no idea what you're talking about,” he tried to deny the whole thing.

“C'mon, it's no secret that you like your omegas young.” I couldn't keep the sneer from my face. I hated this man. “You were fired from your job as teacher with the local high school because you couldn't keep your dirty hands off your students.”

He scoffed. “You have no idea what happened. They were all begging me for some extra attention.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. How was I going to stay in this room without throwing up? It seemed harder by the second. “In any case,” I said, trying to recover my composure. “The fact is that you were fired.”

“It's a shame too.” He shook his head. “Everyone in this town, they act all high and mighty but they have no idea what it's like for a virile alpha like me to live in a sexless marriage.”

Was he actually looking for sympathy? He was getting none from me. “You could end that marriage any time.”

He waved me off. “Kade is gonna come running back home soon enough when LA spits him back out.”

“You know that's never going to happen.”
