“You're right. That's why you can't breathe a word of this toanyone.” I knew I had to tell Shane. This was his baby too, after all. But I wasn't ready to do it yet. And I definitely wasn't going to do it in a YouTube message. Or even on the phone. “I need to move my flight up.”

“Yeah, you really do. Man, I almost wish I could come with you to see this play out.”

“Is that the only reason you want to come with?” I asked, glancing at my friend from the side.

“What are you talking about?”

“Oh, just that alpha you kept staring at during the wedding.”

“Shuddup.” He hit me with a throw pillow.

“Hey!” I protested. “Don't go hitting pregnant people, you savage.”

He laughed, and then I had to laugh as well.

“God,” he breathed. “I still can't believe you're pregnant. You're my best friend. And you're pregnant. Fuck.”

“You'll have to stop cursing so much when the baby is here,” I teased him.

“So you're keeping it?”

“Probably?” I shrugged. Honestly, I hadn't planned on having a child at this point in my life, but the thought of abortion didn't sit well with me either. “As you said, I gotta talk to Shane.” This was going to make a lot of things a lot more complicated. There was nothing to say Shane wanted another baby on top of the children he already had. I only hoped he wasn't going to take this too badly. I wasn't the only one too caught up to think of a condom that night. If anything, it was his fault, really. His touch had made me forget all reason.

“I promise I'll keep you up to date on everything,” I said, getting up. Then I went to my room to make a phone call.

Shane didn't pick up the phone immediately. He never did. Always busy. Well, he was going to be even busier in the future if he had to raise another child. Oh God, where were we going to raise this child? How?

I bit my lower lip.

Calm down, Kade. There's time to figure all that out.

“Kade?” Shane asked when the call finally connected. He sounded surprised. I didn't blame him. Usually I told him I was going to call ahead of time. “Is something wrong?”

“Not exactly,” I said, trying to make my voice sound cheerful rather than nervous. It was a good thing I was a performer and I could hide my nerves reasonably well when I needed to. “I was wondering what you'd think about seeing me a little earlier than we'd planned.”

“Earlier? That would be great! But I thought you'd already booked your flight.”

“The dates can be changed for a small fee.” Or not so small, but this was important and I could afford it. Money was the least of my worries right then.

“Is there a reason you want to move your flight up?”

“What, you don't want me to?” I pretended to be insulted by this question.

“That's not it, but you told me you couldn't do any earlier than next month because this was a crucial time for you to rack up followers. You said you needed to keep working. So I'm wondering what's changed.”

“Nothing,” I said, a little too quickly as I paced the room to burn nervous energy. “Nothing's changed, I just... I need to see you. Can I please?” I let some of the desperation I felt seep into my voice.

“Of course you can,” Shane said, his voice warm, comforting. I sat down on my bed, cradling my head in my hand. “Are you sure that everything's okay?”

“Yes,” I lied. And then I asked, “How's everything going with you?” Because I wanted to keep him on the phone for a little while longer.

“Good,” he said, his tone turning mischievous. “You know, I watched some recordings ofStar Voicesyesterday.”

“You did?”

“Yes. You were so cute back then.” He sounded so amused I felt some of the tension drain from me simply listening to him.

“Are you saying I’m not cute anymore?”
