Because I was the one keeping him from running around the dorms and telling everyone that he was going to be a daddy. And even after our child was born, he would have to lie about his or her parentage.
How were we going to tell our baby why that was?
“Lucas?” Adam pulled me out of my thoughts. “Is everything all right?”
“Yeah. I was just thinking...”
“About whether we're having a girl or a boy? Do you have a preference?”
Did I? Adam's question was throwing me for a loop—and distracting me from the gloomy thoughts I'd been caught up in. “I don't know,” I said truthfully. “Do you?”
“Nope.” Adam shook his head with a small smile. “I just think it'd be easier to pick out a name if we could narrow it down.”
That made sense. Exhaling, I closed my eyes for a moment.
“Do you feel anything?” he asked.
I feel a bit ridiculous,I thought, but I wasn't going to tell him that. Not while he was being this excited. “Maybe a girl?” I said. “Can't promise anything, though.”
“A girl!” Adam pumped his fist in the air. “I can work with that!”
I had to laugh at that. “Yeah? What are you going to name her?”
“I don't know, yet, but I promise, it's gonna be good.”
“Do I get a say in the matter?”
“Of course you will.” Adam laughed and kissed my forehead. “We're in this together as a team, right?”
I sighed and leaned into him. “I guess. I wish I didn't have to leave school. I wish I could stay here with you.”
“It'll only be for a short while,” he reminded me. “And then we'll be united again.”
“What are you going to tell your parents?” I asked.
“That I found the love of my life and I'm going to raise a child with him.” He said it without hesitation and as if it was the only logical thing hecouldsay.
“How does the love of your life have a child when he's a beta?”
“I... uh... haven't figured that out yet. The stork?” he suggested. “Or maybe Santa brought it.”
“Santa?” I shot my alpha a skeptical look. “Where would Santa get babies?”
“I don't know. The same place the stork gets them? Hell, I’ll just tell my parents a penguin brought it.
They wouldn’t question that. They fucking love penguins.”
I kept looking at my alpha. Had he lost his mind?
“Seriously, though.” Adam reached for my hands and squeezed them. “I'll tell my parents whatever you want me to tell them.”
“I'll think about it,” I promised. After all, once I was at my parents' place and hiding from the rest of society, I would have all the time in the world to think about Adam and the baby and our future together.
I only hoped I would think of something good.
