On the other hand it would also mean forgetting the best sex I'd ever had and that seemed like a tragic loss.
"I'm not going to see you again, am I?"
The vampire considered this for a moment. "Not if you're lucky," he said. "Now close your eyes."
I complied only because I knew there was no way for me to get out of this in any case. I couldn't stop Talon from doing his thing, and he was right, I probablyshouldn'tmake him bite me again. As much as it sucked, I was in no condition for that. "I kind of don't want to forget you," I admitted softly.
With my eyes closed, I couldn't see Talon, but I heard his intake of breath. Had I shocked him? Yeah, I wasn't sure why I was saying shit like this either. This day had put me in a weird mood for sure.
"You know what? Just go ahead and do the thing," I made myself say.
"As you wish." Talon leaned closer to place a light kiss on my forehead. "It's been a pleasure knowing you, Sparkles."
Seriously, what was up with that nickname? Before I could ask, a weird sensation shot through me. It was almost like having a couple of hairs plucked from my head, only it wasn't hairs butthoughts. It didn't hurt, but it wasn't exactly pleasant either. I snapped my eyes open to figure out what was going on, but my room was dark.
There was someone in here with me, though, and he was walking to the door.
"Ta—" I called out but didn't get farther than that. One moment I thought I knew his name and the next, it was gone from my mind. I tried to get up, but started feeling woozy before I could even swing my legs out of bed. Clutching my head, I cursed myself. What was wrong with me?
The stranger paused at the door as if to make sure that I was okay before leaving, but what did he care, and what was he doing in my room in the first place? And most importantly, why didn't I want him to leave?
"Ta..." I tried again, feeling like the word was just on the tip of my tongue. His name started with that sound, I was sure of it.WhyI was so sure of it, though, I couldn't say.
The stranger left before I could ask.
Chapter Seven
One Month Later
I didn't mind sharing my place with a roommate, but the best days were the days when he was visiting family and I had the whole apartment to myself. Especially after I'd had the day from hell at work. I got horizontal on the couch, dangled my feet over the edge and grabbed the TV remote from the small coffee table my roommate and I had found abandoned by the side of the road one day. Turning the TV on, I was ready to close my eyes and doze off to the sounds of some animal kingdom documentary running in the background, but then somebody knocked on the door.
Luke, I had invited Luke. Internally, I cursed my past self, but my past self had not known how tired I would be.
With a groan, I got up from the couch and walked over to the door to open it for my little brother.
And then I smiled because he was carrying pizza boxes. "Come in," I said, stepping aside.
"I figured you'd be hungry," he said as he handed the pizza boxes to me. "You only got off work like half an hour ago, right?"
"Yeah. Did you get pepperoni?"
"Of course I did. I remember you telling me it's not a pizza if there's no pepperoni." The little shit rolled his eyes at me.
"At least I don't put pineapple on my pie. Some days it's hard to believe we're related," I joked, ruffling a hand through his hair. He was wearing another one of his graphic tees today, this one showing theAvengerslogo. My little brother was such a nerd. All that was missing was a pair of thick glasses. In other words, he was adorable, even if he enjoyed pineapple on pizza.
"You want a beer?" I asked as I put the pizzas down on the table before making my way to the kitchen.
"I'm good."
I grinned because I hadn't really expected him to say yes anyway. "I'll grab you a coke from the fridge."
When I came back into the living room, a can of coke in each hand, Luke stood staring at my roommate’s fake swords mounted on the wall across from the window, just the way he did every time he came over. "Are you sure they're not real?" he asked.
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe we could test them." I made to reach for one of the swords.
"Let's not." Luke turned away. He was so predictable, enjoying danger only on screen. He could watchThe Lord of the Ringsall day, but show him a real sword—or even one that looked real enough—and he freaked out. "Your roommate is nuts," he said, as if to defend his reluctance. "If he thinks you messed with this stuff he'll probably cut your head off while you're sleeping."
"Relax." I sat on the couch and patted the empty space next to me. “Shouldn’t your nerdy heart love these things?” I was pretty sure that my roommate used them for something he called live action roleplay, which sounded like it would be right up Luke’s alley.
