We reached the office door, but there was another vampire blocking it.

Too late, Talon's words echoed in my ears. They always worked in teams!

Shit!

My fingers tightened around the bloodied stake in my hand.

"Oh?" The vampire arched an eyebrow at me. "I see you guys are multiplying."

My mouth opened, but I didn't have a comeback.

Luckily, I didn't need one.

Faster than I could really follow with my eyes, a tiny leopard ran past me, then morphed into a red-haired human—no, a vampire, it had to be. Something glinted in the light and slashed through the air, and blood sprayed from our enemy's neck where his head should have been but wasn't anymore.

The newly arrived vampire wiped the blood from his face, licked his lips, and smiled. "Takes a vampire to kill one."

We stared in shock.

“You don’t have to look at me like that,” the vampire said. “I’ve been wanting to off that guy for ages. He’s been parking in my spot.”

What the….?

It took a few more seconds for my brain to catch up with the events, but when the newcomer approached me and Luke, I realized that I'd seen him before. With Talon. He was Talon's partner.

Thank God.

I exhaled.

"Where's Talon?"

"Dealing with the other guy."

I whirled around and headed back the way we'd come.

Talon and the strange vampire were grappling on top of the stairs. It looked like Talon was gaining the upper hand, though. His fingers were closing around the other vamp's neck.

"Take him out!" I shouted.

Talon glanced my way.

And then a deafening shot rang through the air.

My world stopped.

The other vampire had used Talon's distraction, to pull a gun and shoot him. I wouldn't have believed it possible if I hadn't known how quickly vampires could move. A second was all he'd needed, and I'd provided it.

A scream pierced my ears as Talon fell back. I didn't even realize that it was coming out of my own mouth until my throat started feeling raw. And even then, I couldn't stop.

This couldn't be happening!

My vision blurred. My skin tingled. Something built up in me, some sort of invisible force that made my blood run hot. Wind whipped around my ears. I had no ideahow, because we were still inside, but I didn't care either. Icouldn'tcare. All I could see was Talon, lying on the ground, and the monster who'd done this to him.

Someone called my name. Luke or Remy, I wasn't sure. It didn't matter.

Acting on pure instinct, I stretched my hand out to the vampire who'd hurt the man I loved. The invisible force spiraled in me, flowing through me and into my arm. My hand glowed, allof me glowed. I washummingwith power, and this vampire was going to go down.

And then the sound of screams filled my head. Desperate screams. So loud they drowned out all my thoughts and forced me to my knees. I clutched my ears, wishing it would stop.
