What wasn't like him? That he hadn't told Remy or that he'd done it all? Both were strong contenders. "You don't need to worry about shit like that. It's in the past. Just do like the snow queen and let it go."
"Didn't think you were a Disney fan."
"I don't have to be. That shit's everywhere.I told you I keep up with the times." Topic successfully changed.
Or not.
"I owe you my life," Remy insisted.
"You don't owe me shit. This isn't a movie or whatever. I'm not gonna call in a favor."
"No?" Remy mulled this over. Aldrich watched the gears in his head turn, mildly fascinated. It was always hard to tell what was going on in this mortal's mind. Part of the reason he was so entertaining. In fact, Aldrich could never have predicted the next words that came out of Remy's mouth. "Would you want to bite me?"
Aldrich stared at the mortal before him. His eyes wandered to Remy's neck. Did he want to bite Remy? Hell yes. But he couldn’t overplay his hand now. That would be a rookie mistake. If he waited a bit longer, maybe he could get more than just a little blood. "You don't want me to bite you."
"My brothers don't seem to mind being bitten."
"You're not your brothers."
"No." Remy's gaze sank to his lap, then found Aldrich's again. "It'll be just once." He paused. "I know you won't take too much."
Aldrich regraded the mortal wordlessly. Of course he wouldn't kill Remy with his bite. What was the point of saving him if he was gonna do that? But the fact was that he could, and Remy knew that. Remy trusted him anyway.
"I realize you could bite me any time if you wanted to," Remy said as if he could tell what was on Aldrich's mind.
"Where's the fun in that?" Aldrich countered, but his eyes were glued to Remy's neck again. Would he really get to have a taste? Involuntarily, he licked his lips. He didn't know how Remy would taste, but he could imagine.
He wanted it.
"You have my promise," Remy said. "One bite. I think I owe you that much." He rubbed the side of his neck.
"When you're doing better," Aldrich made himself say. It would be foolish to bite the mortal while he was sick.
"Yeah, okay." Remy let his hand sink to his side, his shoulders relaxing. His eyes darted to Aldrich, then away again. "Guess we'll wait until I get out of here."
Aldrich nodded, and made a mental note to see about getting some of Jared's blood bottled for Remy's consumption. It wouldn’t be as potent as live-blood, but better than nothing. The sooner Remy could be released from the hospital, the better.
And not just because Aldrich was getting really fucking tired of this chair.
Chapter Six
The dayI was cleared to go home, I was both relieved and stressed. Happy that I would get to see my family again, nervous about the conditions they were living in now. About the threat that was hanging over all our heads.
A little bit nervous about the promise I'd made with Aldrich too. If he even still remembered that. It had been a week, after all.
No, I was positive he still remembered. He never brought the topic up again, but I knew it was on his mind. Way too often, I'd turn and catch him staring at my neck.
It was bizarre, really. I'd fought off a number of admirers before, but never one who'd wanted to drink my blood.
Then again, I’d also neverofferedmy blood to anyone. Truth be told, my own actions were just as bizarre as the vampire’s.
"Happy to go home?" Aldrich asked while we were waiting for Puck, who was gonna get me to the new safe house the same way he'd transported my brother between there and the hospital before.
"Looking forward to real food," I said. Food that I had prepared myself, specifically. I missed cooking. Hell, I missed doing anything that didn't involve lying in a bed all day. My doctor had been in here a moment ago, reminding me of my check-up dates and how often my bandages had to be changed, advising me on my medication... I knew I wasn't a hundred percent yet, but I was ready for some light activities. According to my doctor, I'd made a very fast recovery, all things considered.
She didn't know about my brother's blood, of course, and there was no way I could explain to her, so I didn't try.
"What are you going to cook?" Aldrich asked.
