"That whole ghost-summoning bullshit."

"He said it's safe."

"I don't trust the guy." The vampire's eyes narrowed while mine closed.

"You're biased because he's a witch."

"I'm not biased at all."

"Whatever." I yawned, wondering if my siblings were still talking about me, about my premonitions. The thought made some of my sleepiness fall off me. If I dreamed tonight, would my dreams be real?

I was so tired of seeing things I couldn't make sense of.

"Aldrich?" I cracked an eye open at the vampire.

"Yeah?"

"Can you do that thing you did in the hospital? When you put me to sleep?"

"Really?" One of Aldrich's eyebrows quirked up. "I thought you forgot about that. Kinda expected you to rip me a new one."

"I didn't dream that night."

"Interesting side-effect." Aldrich walked up to the bed and sat on the edge of the mattress. "I can't do that too often."

"You don't have enough magic?"

"No, but it wouldn't be good for you. Guess nothing beats natural sleep."

"Just tonight then."

Aldrich's hand hovered over my forehead, but he hesitated. After a second, though, his lips twitched up and his cocky nature reappeared. "You know what else is really relaxing?"

"What?"

"Getting bitten."

I huffed out a short laugh. "You'll get your turn."

"I know. I'm gonna hold you to that."

Those were the last words I heard before Aldrich worked his magic and sleep took over.

Chapter Seven

When I walked downinto the kitchen for breakfast the next morning, I caught my sister taking a sip from a bottle in the fridge. A bottle with red liquid in it.

"Shouldn't we save that for the vampires?" I asked.

She startled. "You're up early."

"I went to sleep early." And it had been a blissfully dreamless sleep too. It was really too bad I couldn't ask Aldrich for the same again tonight.

Maybe I would, anyway.

Elle put the blood back in the fridge and sat at the kitchen island, pushing her bangs out of her face. "Caspar said it might help me focus my powers."

"So how long have you and Caspar been a thing?"
