“That’s what you’re mad about? Because I stopped you from going to your room with Rune?”
“I don’t see how you have any right to interfere when you seem to have no problem having fun in your own room,” I snap.
“Bea,” he cautions, “you have no idea how dangerous some of the other vampires can be. You didn’t even realize he was a vampire.”
The statement is sobering because it’s true. I had no idea.
“Would he have hurt me?” I ask softly.
“No, but he’s a bit of an ass and quite territorial. Look, this is a lot. I was hoping to explain vampire things to you in a way that wouldn’t scare you off.”
“You’re not scaring me off,” I say, unable to stop myself from challenging this creature of a man who could probably drain me in two minutes flat. “But if you want to wait until tomorrow to tell me more, I get it. I think I’ve heard enough for one day. You should try to call your other human friend back. No point in both of us having our moods killed.”
He rubs the back of his neck.
“Sorry. I should have been more discreet, but I really needed to eat.”
“And get laid from the sounds of it.”
“It’s not like that,” he says, whispering in my ear. “Giving blood can be a very sensual experience. It doesn’t seem fair to receive something that precious without giving something in return. It’s why some humans love to offer.”
My skin prickles at his words in my ears. Something about what he’s saying makes my own blood stir up under my skin. I feel flushed all over.
“I think I should go to bed now,” I say, looking into his eyes. He nods with the slightest lift of his chin.
It takes me some time to settle myself once I get in bed. I think of Dennis, alone in his room. Is he wishing his friend hadn’t run off? How long would they have kept going at it if I hadn’t come back up with Rune?
I run my fingers along my inner thighs, imagining Rune’s strong grip. How would my own night have gone if Dennis hadn’t sensed us by the door?
I think of Rune’s fangs at my neck, the blood pulsing beneath my skin, waiting for a sharp bite of pain. I bet he’d hold my wrists against the mattress. Then my mind flits to Dennis moving slower, his tongue tracing up my inner thigh. Isn’t there a big vein there?
The thought of both of them is almost too much to handle.
A faint yapping sound pulls me from my thoughts, just as I’m about to slip my fingers beneath my panty line.
“Oh. Hello, Darling,” I sigh, patting the bed for my ghost pup. “Did you have fun exploring the city?”
I turn on the TV, trying to block out the other thoughts I’m having. I might as well stay up for another hour or two rewatching my favorite comfort anime.

DRESS UP
I'm in a deep sleep when my phone goes off.
“What now?” I groan, fumbling for it on the nightstand. The comforter has the perfect amount of fluff and weight to it. No part of me wants to leave this bed. I don’t think I’ve ever been woken from such a good night’s sleep, or dream for that matter.
Images of tangled legs, hands, and tongues running along fangs are still vivid in my mind when I stare bleary-eyed at the phone. It takes a few moments for the words to make sense.
Dennis: Your ride is on the way to take you shopping. Silver Mercedes. Be nice to Barb, please.
“Who the hell is Barb?” I ask myself, frowning. I groan and pull the covers over my head. My phone pings with another text.
Dennis: She’s another mortal who works with us. Stop grumbling and get whatever you need.
Me: You heard that?
I sigh heavily when I see his next text is just a vampire emoji. He might be one of the hottest dudes I’ve ever seen, but he texts like a grandpa.
