“You have done nothing. I knew exactly what I was doing,” he said.

“I do not wish to ruin our friendship, either.” Her big blue eyes looked pleadingly up at him.

“Genie,” he said, stepping forward to grasp her arms. “Promise me you will not dismiss me out of hand. Will you give me a chance?”

“I wish I might understand why you are doing this, Graham,” she said, gazing up into his face.

Graham was angry that this beautiful creature had been so woefully misunderstood and that no one saw her for who she truly was. He vowed to change that.

He kissed her softly on the lips, then pulled slowly away. “I will visit you back in London.” She gave a nod and turned away quickly, but not before he saw tears pooling in her eyes.

Soon after, he watched four horses charge down the drive. Turning, he punched the wall.

He had no idea how he would convince her, but he knew it would be worth his time and energy. His father had often said anything worth having was worth working hard for, and that certainly appeared to be the case. However, he knew one thing for certain—Eugenia Knight was worth having. And he meant to have her.
