He caught his father smiling at them, though he was looking very tired.
“Should you discover if he wishes to return to bed?” Eugenia asked with endearing concern.
“Perhaps, but I do not wish to injure his pride.”
“Then Emma and I will take our leave so he may have his dignity.”
“Only if you promise to see me later.”
“Try to keep me away,” she retorted, daring him as she had since they had been playfellows.
Graham watched as the ladies took their leave, wondering what had come over Eugenia, but too pleased to question it.
