“You have my confidence if you wish it,” he said reassuringly.
She gave a little nod then picked up her glass and held it in front of her mouth. “Please be careful. I overheard the brother and sister making plans to compromise you.”
Had Graham heard correctly?
“I have been in anguish over whether to tell you or not. Kitty is my friend, but my conscience would not allow me to remain silent. If nothing happens, then you will only think me an interfering fool. At least you can make your own decision.”
Graham looked at her. She was young, but she was not silly. “I appreciate your candor, Lady Emily. No one wishes to be compromised and forced into anything.”
He could see the weight lift from her shoulders. She was not yet officially out, but perhaps next Season he would consider her. “May I also say that I wish you, too, to be careful. The brother has mentioned his interest and also his need for a wealthy bride.”
She looked taken aback that she might be considered, but then she seemed to see the sense in his warning. “It appears we might need to guard each other, my lord.”
“Indeed. I will try to do my part with him, but may I also beg of you to ensure that Lady Eugenia is not left alone?”
They both looked over to where Lord Perth was making Eugenia laugh.
“That will be easy. I quite like her.”
Graham rather liked her, too.
