Yes, it had just begun because now I was looking for the man that got away, who couldn’t decide if he was gay or not, and at the time felt guilty about our relationship even as he expressed he wanted to continue seeing me.

Chapter 2

Clay

Last Year

Last year I was hiredby Christopher Mason, but I left the firm so there wouldn’t be a scandal, and had been hired at another firm in direct competition with Halifax and Mason.I had been delusional to think I could find a life with Mason and we’d ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after.

My professional life began and my personal life ended last year when I was hired as an intern at Mason and Halifax’s law firm.It was at a Christmas party I had been invited to the day before it had been held.I had been super excited and considered myself lucky to be working at this elite firm with a building on 5th Avenue.

I had thought of myself lucky to be employed anywhere, because I had just graduated from law school, and fell into a pool of the youngest lawyers Manhattan had seen in years.I had no one to recommend me and no prospects.

All I had were my grades in college, a law degree and the tests required to introduce me.I closed my eyes and picked several, then took a chance and sent in my resumé.

I hadn’t been on social media because I never had the time.No Instagram accounts. No Tic Tok complaining about the cost of going to college and law school.

I had signed up for one site that asked about my job qualifications, and a picture of myself.I didn’t know what I was thinking because it was a picture of me in my last year of college and I was about twenty-two.When I went for the interview, I had turned twenty-five and my hair had been cut short for the interview. If you asked me, I didn’t look like myself.

That cheap haircut I could afford wouldn’t have gotten me into a dog show or maybe it would if they were looking for a bull terrier because my head looked egg shaped.Everything looked all wrong when I stepped into the head of the firm’s office.

For some unknown reason, I had been hired on the spot, and I waited for my interview.I later discovered it all had to do with menothaving a presence on social media complaining about my life, and how much it sucked to be a young man without a job and gay.

When I completed my interview, I was surprised I would begin working and the salary was more than I could ever expect working the halls of tenants’ court even if I was lucky to get that.

I came from New Jersey and managed to go to Brooklyn College and finally to law school. It became apparent Mason had been impressed with my grades and my looks when I strode into his office nervous and worried about a haircut that looked like someone placed a bowl on my head and cut around it, which my roommate, Marty, had done after convincing me he knew what he was doing.

I could have cried, but there was no way I could put my long hair back with glue and I didn’t have a wig or I would have worn that.Even a hat would have been out of the question because I would have to take it off at some point.

With no other solution, I decided to make the best of a bad situation.I had to distract the man with my personality, and even that was inadequate. When I strode into Mason’s office, I had to own this haircut and pretend it wasn’t looks he’d hired me for, but for my mind if the focus had been put on my haircut.Hopefully it wouldn’t be.
