The instant she saw Kurt, she knew she was going to be okay. He would protect their baby. Her. He would make it okay. The baby would be okay.
But…Greer’s head hurt. She couldn’t breathe. Her chest hurt. He had kicked her when she’d been trying to get to her feet. In the chest.
In her chest, not her stomach. Not where the baby grew.
Her baby. All she wanted was for her baby to beokay.
Somehow, someone else yelled her name.
She looked up. Into a beautiful face. And she knew…she would be okay.
Her brother was there. And Kurt was there.
Her baby was going to beokay.
Gene pulled the tape off her mouth. Greer could breathe again. She pulled in as much air as she could. “He…hit me…kicked me…ribs…head. Help Kurt…don’t let him hurt Kurt.”
That’s when she remembered.
“Has a box cutter, Gene. Don’t let him hurt Kurt…”
“Chase can hold his own, kid. I’m more worried about you.”
There was someone else there, then. Gunn dropped to his knees beside her. “Greer. Hallelujah. Where are you hurt? Guth is coming.”
“Hit me. But not…where baby…Head hurts. Help Kurt. Gene, help him.”
“I got her,” Gunn said. “Go get that guy so he doesn’t get away.”
“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

No.Nothing he did ever went right. Dwayne screamed a sound of real rage. As the bastard ripped the pipe he’d carried around in his truck for months from Dwayne’s hand.
Where had Chase even come from? How had he known?
Dwayne slugged the guy, as hard as he could. But Chase was younger, bigger. Stronger. “You fucking betrayed your brother with that whore.”
Chase just kept fighting.
Dwayne had the box cutter in his fist. He’d sliced his own fucking hand, but he hadn’t let go. If he didn’t get away from this fucker, Chase would kill him.
He’d bash Dwayne’s brains in or something. And Dwayne recognized the other man out there. Gene Fucking Hiller.
They’d kill him and say Dwayne had done it to himself or something. And everyone would believe them.
Unless…
Dwayne killed them and the girlfirst.
Dwayne lashed out with the razor blade.
Chase yelled out. A sound unlike anything Dwayne had ever heard before.
Rage.That was what it was.
