What she was.

Because Jules was mine.

“Oh.” She blinked a few times, her eyes staying wide as she continued to stare at me. “So what does that mean?”

“It means you’re the only woman in my life.” That wasn’t the most important part. “And I want to be the only man in yours.”

She flattened out her lips, pressing down a smile. “It’s really flattering that you assumed I had a whole lineup of men waiting to date me.”

“You said you had a list.”

“Of men I wouldn’t date.” She scooped out a little more cake. “It’s a lot harder to find men I would date.”

Good.

I waited. Expecting some sort of agreement.

I wanted us to come to an understanding.

I fucking needed it.

For my own sanity.

“What about Valentina?” The question was quiet. “It seemed like you were a little upset about having to cancel your date with her.”

“I wasn’t upset.”

“Okay. Frustrated then.” Her eyes dipped to my dick. “You seemedfrustratedthat you had to cancel your date with her.”

I almost forgot Wilfred’s wasn’t the first closet cock she’d had a run-in with recently. “My frustration wasn’t with her.” I swallowed down the bite of fear trying to keep me from offering the truth Julia clearly needed to hear. “My frustration was with you.”

Her eyes jumped to mine. “Me?”

“That’s right.” I leaned close. “You frustrated the hell out of me.”

“Why?” The question was barely a whisper.

And nothing I could answer in under an hour, which meant I had to keep things simple.

For now.

“Because you scare the shit out of me.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Julia

I WASN’T SURE what to say to that.

I’d never scared anyone in my life.

Not even Wilfred when I walked in on his free-swinging jungle vine.

“Why would you be scared of me?”

His expression hardened. “You remind me of someone I used to know.”

That didn’t sound good. “You liked her.”
