Actually, Sylvia would fit in perfectly at Sweet Side Apartments. I could see her and Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Sherling running amok. “It’s usually pretty tame there.”

“You mean outside of the issues my uncle causes.” Elaine snagged her purse from the pile Michael sent home.

What was happening with Vito was technically none of my business anymore.

His sister and niece were here, which meant the torch had been passed.

But I was still worried.

“Do you think he’s okay?”

Elaine turned my way, her expression softening. “Can I tell you something about men, Julia?”

I would love to hear what she had to say about men. Especially since Elaine didn’t seem to be the kind of woman who let a man control any part of her life. “Yes.”

“They make everything more complicated than it has to be.” She smiled. “And that includes my son.”

The words were wise, but I wasn’t sure how they applied to Vito. “You think Vito got into a complicated situation?”

“I think the situation is actually much simpler than it seems.” She gave me a wink as she made her way toward the living room. “It always is.”

I hoped she was right, because so far this whole thing seemed messy as hell.

Kidnapped fish. Missing old men. Stolen panties.

Frozen tails.

If Elaine thought this was simple then I’d hate to see what she thought was complicated.

The paper bag caught my eye and pulled me in.

Because you know whatwassimple?

Chocolate.

And Michael clearly knew I was a girl who liked chocolate.

I reached in and pulled out one of the plastic containers, lifting it up to peer through the clear lid.

“Anything in there look good?”

Grant’s deep voice sent me spinning his way.

And suddenly chocolate lava cake looked significantly less appealing.

Especially compared to what I was looking at now.

“Where’s your shirt?” The pale pink shirt that matched the flamingos on his pants was missing, leaving me staring at the broad expanse of his chest.

“You probably don’t want to know the answer to that.” Grant stepped in beside me, snagging the bag from the counter. “Come on, Banana Pants. I think you earned a trip to the basement tonight.”

Chapter Twenty

Grant

THIS WAS PROBABLY a bad idea, but at this point I just wanted to rip the Band-Aid off.

Put it all out there and deal with the fallout.
