And maybe I was. I’m not for everyone, and maybe Grant was one of those people.

That was fine. After spending so much of my life being something I wasn’t, there was no way I would ever feel bad about someone not liking me for who I really was.

I was too happy to finally be her.

I shoved some clothes into my suitcase, grabbing random shit and stacking it up. In about five minutes I had everything I could possibly need.

Except for underwear.

I zipped the bag up and dropped it to the floor at my feet.

Was this really a smart thing to do?

I didn’t actually know Grant well.

He could be crazy.

Or worse, the kind of person who used a squeegee after they showered.

“You ready?” Grant stood in the hall, my purse in his hands. He held it out. “I picked up everything I could find.”

I took it from him. “Thanks.” I opened my wallet and went through my cards. My debit card was untouched, as was my credit card and driver’s license.

They didn’t even steal my rewards card for the grocery store.

The twenty I kept on hand just in case was also there, tucked into place.

“Did they take anything?”

I shook my head. “Nothing.” I dropped the wallet back into the bag. “They were looking for the money, weren’t they?”

“That’s my guess.” Grant came a little closer. “I’m sorry, Jules. I wish you weren’t in the middle of this.”

“It’s okay.” I lifted one shoulder. “I mean, I really wish they hadn’t taken all my underwear.”

“I’ll buy you new underwear.”

“Are you offering to take me panty shopping, Grant?”

His eyes immediately sharpened and his jaw clenched.

This was the part that was confusing me.

Because I was pretty sure Grant liked me.

Like-liked me.

But then he kissed the shit out of me and sent me to bed alone.

“Oh my.”

Grant turned toward the voice at the front of my apartment.

I came out of my room to find Mrs. Sherling standing at my still-open door. Her eyes came to me. “Julia dear, what in the world happened?”

I eyed the obvious footprint on my door. What happened seemed pretty clear to me. “Someone kicked in my door.”

“What is going on around here?” She held a plastic grocery bag close to her chest. “Did you call the police?”
