And right now I didn’t have time to figure out what she was thinking. “What’s that look for?”

“It might be too late.” She offered me a tight smile. “Sorry.”

“I’m sure it’s fine.” I quickly signed the slip Benjamin passed my way before tucking my wallet into the surprisingly-roomy pocket of my new pants.

“You’d think so.” Grant shook his head. “And for your sake I hope it is.” He slapped me on the back. “Good luck.”

I tipped my head his way as I hurried toward the door, waving one hand over my head as I rushed out. “Thank you.”

The ride to Collette’s house was short, and traffic was moving well, so I’d only just started to sweat when I pulled into her driveway.

The door to her garage opened almost immediately, bringing a pair of black high heels into view.

I was frozen in place as the door crept up, slowly revealing Collette, inch by perfect inch.

And each inch I gained proved just how much I was set to lose.

My mind.

My sanity.

My control.

“Jesus.” I managed to keep the word quiet enough I was sure she didn’t hear it.

If this was the dress Sylvia helped Collette pick out then the woman should be labeled as a national treasure.

Because it was fucking unreal.

Black lace clung to every curve of Collette’s body. Bits of her skin peeked through spots that were strategically cut out to reveal just enough to make me consider skipping the reservation I hadn’t known we had. A slit cut up the side of her leg, almost to the hip joint, revealing one of the thighs I thought of more than I should.

Imagined pressed against my ears more nights than I could count.

Her blonde hair was curled into soft waves that fell around her bare shoulders and back. A set of bracelets was the only jewelry she wore, which made sense, considering no one would be looking at anything but her.

Except for maybe the chicken she had on a leash.

Chapter Twenty-One

Collette

I PEEKED OUT my window at the building beside us. “This is where we’re going?”

Julia gave me a heads-up that I should put on the dress Sylvia helped me pick out, but I never guessed Andrew would bring me to a place like this. It wasn’t really his style.

“Looks like.” He didn’t sound any more excited than I was.

“Why?” The Sweet Side was the swankiest place in town.

It was also where my granddad hung out and did his best to seduce old women with low standards.

“Grant’s mother made us a reservation.”

That made me feel a little better. At least this place wasn’t Andrew’s idea of a good time.

I watched as the valet let the couple in front of us out of their expensive car.

Then we were up next. Unfortunately.
