Wouldn’t.
I turned and ran to the door, racing out to my cart and jumping in. My foot hit the floor as I bounced across the lawn, headed toward the only person who could help me figure out what to do.
Julia was at the smallest of the koi ponds, checking on the aquatic plants floating in the water when I pulled up.
She turned my way and immediately stood up. “What’s wrong?”
“The cops just came. Someone said they saw me dropping the chickens into the trailer last night.” I talked as fast as I could. The longer I took to explain, the longer Andrew would be…
Wherever he was.
I shoved one hand into my stomach, trying to ease the sickness twisting my belly up. “They said they saw me pull up with a carful of chickens.”
Julia’s jaw dropped and her eyes went wide. “No, they didn’t.”
“I know.” I pressed my free hand to my head. “They’re lying and now Andrew’s going to jail.” The last bit barely made it out as I started to cry.
Ah-freaking-gain.
This was all bullshit.
Every bit of it.
The chickens.
The assholes behind us.
The assholes among us.
I was over it all.
“Wait.” Julia grabbed my shoulders. “Why is Andrew going to jail?”
“Because he told them he did it.” I sounded like a wailing wounded cat. “They were going to arrest me.”
“Awe.” Julia smiled a little. “That’s sweet of him.”
I sniffed. “It really is.” My face twisted as my emotions warred it out. “But now he’s going to jail.”
“He won’t be there long.” Julia grabbed my hand and dragged me toward my cart.
“That’s what he said.” I fell into the passenger’s side as Julia took the wheel. I held on as she whipped the cart through the garden. “Where are we going?”
“First, I need to make a call.” She turned my way, smiling wide as we took a corner a little too fast. “Then we’re going to go get him.”

“ARE YOU SURE this will work?” I leaned closer to Julia as I watched the woman walking toward my Jeep.
She was gorgeous. Glamorous.
And had an air about her that made me sit a little straighter.
“Positive.” Julia smiled wide as the woman gracefully slid into the back seat. “Don’t you look pretty.”
“Oh, thank you, dear.” Elaine Servantes set her expensive handbag on the seat next to her as she settled into the seat.
Julia held one hand my way. “Elaine, you remember my friend Collette.”
