Chapter Seven

––––––––

CAMRIEL ALMOST DOZEDoff during the long drive back to their base. The storms were over by the time Amaros parked in his usual spot beneath the trees. The hail had thankfully already swept through the area.Zoe emerged from the north wing to hug him tightly.

“Hey, Cam,” Grace said from the empty doorway. Her breath frosted and she was hugging herself for warmth. He was amused to see she was still wearing tights beneath cutoff jean shorts.

“What are you still doing up, shorty?”he asked, pushing aside his envy at seeing the bonded couple reconnecting.

“Zoe and I were worried about you guys,” the cambion said.

He pulled her to his side and gave her a gentle squeeze.“We didn’t run into any of our enemies,” he reported.

“Did you sense any knights or cambions?”she asked, hugging him around his muscular waist as they headed to the kitchen. It was the warmest room in the house, since the fireplace was ablaze. The girls had set up a folding table and chairs near the fire to keep warm.He noticed a pile of books on the table that they were working their way through.Zoe’s were all how-to books to repair their base.Grace’s stack were all romance books.

Camriel hesitated before responding.“Nope,” he said, but she’d already picked up on it.

“Zoe!”the kid bellowed.“Stop kissing Amaros and get your butt in here!”

“We’ll pick this up again when we go to bed,” Amaros murmured, but not quite quietly enough.

“I can’t wait,” Zoe replied.

Grace rolled her eyes at the heat in her friend’s tone. She refrained from teasing the pair when they strolled into the room.“Cam sensed someone during their scouting mission,” she announced.

Amaros took a seat next to his bonded, but Camriel remained standing.“Who did you sense?”Zoe asked eagerly.

Camriel shook his head in frustration.“It was just a fleeting impression both times,” he said.

“Bothtimes?”Amaros asked, raising an eyebrow.“When did it happen the second time?”

“When we were twenty miles from where we left your tank,” his second explained.

“Is it his cambion?”Grace asked, green eyes alight with curiosity.

They all looked at Zoe, but she shrugged.“I haven’t seen any visions of her,” she said.“I’m sure Fate will send her to us in due time.”
