“We owe you, miss,” a man said in deep gratitude and his neighbors nodded in agreement.“He’s been killing women for the past five days,” he added.
“We should have known it was that weirdo,” a middle-aged woman with dark circles around her eyes said in disgust.“He’s always been a strange one.”
“He’s gone now, so you’ll be safe for a while,” Victoria said.“I guess I’ll be on my way.”
“Why don’t you stay?”someone suggested with an edge of desperation.“We could use a fighter like you to protect us.”
“Sorry, but I’m on my way to my sister’s place,” Victoria said, making up an excuse on the spot.
“On foot?”he asked skeptically.
“My car died a few miles back,” she lied.“It’ll take me a couple of hours to walk the rest of the way, so I’d better get going.”
“She’s lying,” the middle-aged woman muttered.“We should stop her.”
Victoria turned and held up her new sickle.“I suggest you all go back into your fudging homes,” she said in a steely voice.“Don’t make me use this on you.”
They scattered like frightened mice, realizing it would be a very bad idea to attack the person who’d just cut a serial killer down.
“Fudging idiots,” she said in a scathing tone, then returned to the main road leading through town.
The delay had set her back a bit, but she decided not to increase her pace.It would just wear her out faster. She maintained her steady jog as she followed the route she’d mapped out.
A noise filtered to her three hours or so later.Cocking her head, she realized it was a vehicle. It would be stupid to allow herself to be seen now that there were so many crazy people running around.Victoria crossed to the closest house and strained towards the approaching vehicle with her senses.
She blanched when her mind brushed against a familiar being. Her feet went into action, carrying her away from the road before the occupants could discover her whereabouts.
Far in the distance, Victoria heard a screech of tires.Someone shouted something and she felt a faint presence trying to invade her mind.It vanished as she sprinted hard, circling around to return to her route while staying a safe distance from the road.
“That was a close one,” she said with a shudder, heart pounding too hard and fast.
The dream she’d had of the aliens with red tinges to their eyes was never far from her mind. For all she knew, they could be the ones who were chasing after her.
Slowing back down, her breathing returned to normal, but she remained alert. She would bolt again at the first sign of someone trying to locate her with their supernatural senses.
“They’re not going to get me,” Victoria vowed.“If they do, I’ll use my new toy on them,” she added, patting the reaping hook she’d tied to a belt loop.It slapped against her thigh with each step she took, but her thick clothing saved her from being nicked by the blade.
