“Looking forward to it.”
We hung up, and I put the phone back in my pocket.
All the night had to offer me were stars shimmering above and cicadas filling the darkness with song.I wasn’t sure what else I wanted, but I felt as if I was missing something.

Lionel
Twentyminutesin,Irealized what I was missing. My damn jacket was still somewhere in the Devil’s house. At two in the morning, what had been a reasonably warm day had cooled enough to make my teeth chatter as I waited for Mitch at the crossroads.
I looked at Lucifer’s house.Even if I went back there, the chances were slim that I’d be able to magic the front door open, sneak inside, and grab my jacket without getting caught. It wasn’t worth risking.Plus, it wasn’t like I’d never left stuff at someone’s place after sex.I’d orphaned socks and made my way home without my underwear. Not a big deal, and better than the alternative.
Facing Lucy.Thinking about…sex.With him.Bad alternative.Very bad alternative.
“Too good.Unreal.Probably magic,” I mumbled, rubbing my arms to keep warm.It was probably better that I was cold.Thinking about sex with Lucifer was…sort of arousing.
I shook my head.It was over and done with, and I’d have to move on.Iwasmoving on.I looked back up at the star-sugared sky.“I’m moved on.Over him. It’s all in the past.Goodbye, jacket.Goodbye, Lucy.”
I sighed. The street was eerily quiet, and I wondered how much of that was due to magic. We were still inside the city limits, after all, and cars should have at least been passing by with some frequency, even at this hour, but the area had a rural feel to it.I couldn’t even see Lucy’s closest neighbors from my spot by the crossroads.
Instead I heard insects and the distant croaking of frogs somewhere in the distance behind the trees. Those trees were odd too, almost like a park.I chalked all of it up to immortal magic and resigned myself to not giving it any more thought than I needed to.
Five minutes later, headlights sliced through the darkness, and I took a step closer to the road, raising an arm to stop the light from blinding me.
The car slowed, and I heard the whirring of the passenger side window.
“Out for a walk?”Sexy Mitch asked from inside the car.
I blinked until my eyes adjusted and I could see him looking at me from behind the wheel.“Sort of.Thanks for doing this.”I pulled the door open and got in, glad for the warmth.
“Anytime.”Mitch closed the window again and cranked the wheel as he got ready to turn.
He wore leather gloves. They stood out in the dashboard’s glow. They looked like real leather too; nothing I’d have worn.I wondered whether it suited him, made him look sexier, but my heart wasn’t in it.I was running my fingers over my lips where fucking Lucifer had kissed me.
I cleared my throat.“So…what’s with the gloves?I mean, I was freezing my ass off just now, but winter hasn’t come yet.”
Mitch was done with the first part of a three-point turn and the car was in reverse. He stopped.
“Hasn’t it?I’m really glad you called me, you know.I knew I wanted you the moment I saw you stumble into the marshes with your skinny ass in those oversized rubber boots.”
He reached into an inside pocket of his jacket, but I was distracted when he turned toward me.I was still thinking about the wood and ash scent that was Lucy, about those noises he made and how his skin felt against mine.
Absently, I went over what Mitch had just said. He’d wanted me.I’d wanted him too, so that was good.In fact, I still wanted him.I crossed my arms to keep my teeth from chattering and my mind from recalling everything Lucifer had done with me, to me.
“Some people appreciate a skinny ass,” I said, doing my best to sound seductive without sounding cheap.Because I still wanted Mitch.I had to remember that.
“Oh, Lionel Hawkes, you have no idea.I’ll appreciate seeing you bound.I’ll appreciate getting to work on you.I’ll appreciate it once I’m done with you.”
I blinked in the darkness, suddenly wary.“I…never realized you’re into bondage and all that? It’s cool, just…” Something felt off, and I tensed.
Mitch struck fast, and the shock of the attack was worse than the pinprick of pain in my thigh.
I opened my mouth to scream, but only a small sound came out.It was barely audible in the interior of the car.I looked down at his hand and the syringe in it.Fuck.
He put the syringe back in his pocket, smiling. His face was sort of unfocused.
“There, that’s better.”
