“Pregnant.” I blurted out. So much for me playing anything cool.
“What?”
“Duke… he said he thought you might be pregnant.”
My mate’s hands fell to his belly. “Well, that would explain things.”
“So you think you might be, too?” I tried not to get my hopes up.
“It’s not like we haven’t been doing the thing that gets one pregnant… often, and I’ve been exhausted, and my stomach’s been pretty crappy… and I passed out that day. I chalked a lotof that up to the stress of my dad’s surgery and finding out what happened with your brother.” A smile bloomed on his face. “Pregnancy fits too.”
“Honestly, it’s a lot happier.” I hugged him close. “So you think you are?”
“I hope so, but we have to test to be sure.”
I never grabbed my keys so fast. “I’ll be right back.” I raced to the pharmacy and bought one of each test I could find. I didn’t want to take the time to read all of the boxes to figure out which was best. The cashier looked at me like I’d lost my mind.
When I got home, Heston grabbed the bag and looked inside. “You want me to take all of these?”
“Yes. No. I don’t know. I bought them all. It was faster.”
“All it is.” He bolted back to the bathroom, this time not for his stomach. I waited outside the door, but really wanted to watch the tests as they changed from blank to announcing his pregnancy. With every second that passed, I got more and more excited about the possibility of becoming a father.
When Heston came out, he told me that he had set a timer to let us know when they were ready.
“How long do we have to wait out here?”
“Three minutes from when I set it.” Three minutes, might as well have been three years. I wanted to see them now.
“We can’t just go and look at them?”
“Nope.” He wrapped his arms around me and pressed his cheek on my chest. “This is good, right? If these are positive, that’s good, right?”
“If they are positive, I’ll be the happiest alpha there is. And if you’re not, then there are other months.”
The timer went off and we walked inside the cramped little space. One glance at the row of tests and there was no mistake. Heston was pregnant.
“You’re pregnant!”
“I am! I love you, Devyn.”
“I love you, Heston.”
The chirping of an alarm went off, this time it was mine. “We were gonna go look at the condo and see if we need any more furniture. You still up for it?”
“Yeah. And maybe on the way back we can stop and talk to my dad, tell him the good news?”
“He’s going to be the best grandfather ever.”
“And because of you, he’ll live to meet our little one.”
Chapter 33
He’s in his own kind of jail.
Heston
“Keep your eyes closed, Dad.”
