“You need to leave. Both of you. And you—doctor whoever—are officially banned from the premises.”
Xander snorted. “Fine. This organization is no use to me anyway if it’s corrupted from the inside. C’mon, sweetheart.” He held out his hand for me. “Let’s go do something salacious with a leash.”
For once, I didn’t blush. Instead, I held my head high as I walked to meet him, taking his hand before turning to stare Tobias down.
“The only leash you should worry about is the choke collaryou’reon the end of,” I calmly spoke, even as I sent a warning ripple of flame down Tobias’ spine.
“Oh, I will!” he shrieked as the archive room doors slammed shut behind us, his courage noticeably rallying with 10 inches of steel protecting him.
As if I couldn’t melt those doors along with him.
I shook the thought out of my head. While the idea of burning Tobias Johnson to a crisp was tempting, murdering a normie for running his mouth was dangerously close to villain territory.
But really, being a villain sounds like so much more fun…
Xander was hurriedly pulling me through the marble lobby toward the nearest exit, his eyes flitting around suspiciously as we moved through the late afternoon crowd. I realized he was still trying to identify the ‘threat’ he’d felt in the records room.
We have to talk about this.
Now.
“Xan!” I forced him to stop and look at me. “I need to—”
“You need to quit your job with Biggs,” he interrupted, chest heaving as if he’d run a mile. “I can’t… I can’t have anyone talking to you like that. If I think you’re being mistreated at work—by Biggs or another employee—I… I don’t know what I’ll do…”
He released me so he could bend over with his hands on his knees, dropping his head and panting as his body worked through whatever intense sensations he was experiencing.
You know exactly what he’s experiencing, Butch.
You’ve been feeling this way since you met.
Were the situation reversed, I would have torn Tobias limb from limb, burning each appendage to ash while he bled out and watched. Whatever this was between Xan and me wasn’t a simple case of attraction. The physicalneedto be near each other, the intense emotional connection, and the almost blinding obsession to protect was unprecedented, and it was a thousand percent mutual.
Even stranger was how my powers had been trying to fuse with the ones hidden within him—somehow recognizing hehadpowers even before I did.
And obviously this is all new to him…
Reaching down, I gently cupped Xander’s jaw, coaxing him to stand. “Let’s go get that drink. I need to tell you what I do for Biggs.”
He simply nodded and slipped his hand into mine, letting me pullhimalong this time, past security and out the door. I took a deep breath as the fresh air hit my face, and glanced around for the closest bar.
My gaze landed on a black town car idling at the end of the brick path, stopping me in my tracks. Solomon Biggs’ personal chauffeur emerged from the driver's side and opened the back door before gesturing inside in a way that left little room to argue.
“Boss wants to see you. He got a call that you were here.”
“That motherfucker,” Xander muttered, tightening his grip on my hand and raising his voice. “If Biggs wants to call you into the principal’s office, he gets to deal with me, too.”
“Suit yourself.” The driver shrugged before addressing me, “Butch—you should know that Biggs has a guest up there with him. Flew in on a tailwind just for you.”
Oh, no.
“Xan,” I gasped, attempting to pull away as I panicked. “Let me deal with this, okay? I-I’ll meet you at home later.”
Our home.
“No fucking way,” Xander growled. “You are not taking the heat for this.” Keeping my hand firmly in his, he stubbornly climbed into the car and dragged me along after him. The door was swiftly closed behind us, trapping us inside.
An anxiety attack was imminent. Yes, I was definitely in trouble for bringing an unapproved guest to the USN with me—an unregistered supe who threatened a government employee—but I wasn’t worried about Biggs’ punishment for me. In the end, he was still just a normie. I could endure his spreadsheets and arbitrary missions to annihilate entire villain families.
