I can’t wait to see him later…
CHAPTER10
BUTCH
I need to get a grip.
Tearing my gaze away from the slowly ticking clock taunting me on the nearby wall, I refocused on the case file open on my desk.
An enormous man stared back at me from the grainy black-and-white photo clipped to the inside. His exaggerated square jaw made him look like a caricature mobster, and without even having his height and weight, I knew he could probably palm my entire head in one of his hands.
To then pop it like a balloon.
Shifting my focus to the other side of the folder, I reread the few stats we had on him.
Agent Penetrate
Villain - Strickland clan
Abilities: Super strength, impenetrable skin, abnormal bone density, punches with momentum equal to a bullet train
Number of hero kills: 7
Last sighting: Twenty miles west of Big City
I sighed. This was why Biggs had called me in on a Saturday, despite me begging for the day off earlier in the week. A villain known for clobbering heroes until they were nothing but a bloody stain on the sidewalk was headed our way, and I was the only one on staff who could take him on.
Without forcing my parents out of retirement, that is.
Penetrate wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle, but I would much rather not have to explain full-body bruising to Xander.
Something tells me he wouldn’t take it well.
A loud clunk from the ticking clock told me another minute had passed, which made my dick jerk in anticipation. Blowing out a slow breath, I closed the file folder and discreetly readjusted my pants, making sure to not touch myself any more than absolutely necessary.
I can be good for three more minutes.
Being assigned this case was actually a blessing in disguise, since it had provided me with an excuse to poke around the highly restricted records room. I spent a few hours there this morning—longer than was necessary—but Ineededto double-check if the woman I saw talking to Xander outside The Gloucester was truly Violentia Suarez.
It was.
We had full files on the entire terrifying Suarez family. Ender and Signe and their five children—Violentia, her younger siblings Baltasar and the twins Gabriel and Andre, and her older brother Wolfgang. Otherwise known as Apocalypto Man and Glacial Girl, Ultra Violent, Blunt Force, Shock and Awe, and The Hand of Death. It was unusual for Biggs Enterprises to care about supervillains’spawn, but every member of the Suarez clan was not only unusually powerful but actively engaged in villainy.
Not that we’ve been able to prove it.
I’d broken into a cold sweat as I stared at Violentia’s deceptively attractive face. As Ultra Violent, she was known for falling into a berserker-like trance of fury while fighting her enemies, turning anything within reach into a deadly weapon. While I had little interest in taking her on—or capturing the attention of her family—I needed to be ready in case she threatened Xander.
Why was she even outside The Gloucester?
I could only assume she’d been staking out my apartment building for supes, saw Xander leave, and wanted to see what sort of information she could pry out of him. Dread weighed heavy in my gut as I once again realized I would have been powerless to stop her had she struck.
If anything happens to him, I don’t know what I’ll do…
The shrill sound of the closing buzzer snapped me out of my spiraling panic. Realizing I had exactly one minute to get downstairs, I shoved the folder in my desk drawer along with my discarded Lycra, grabbed my briefcase and overnight bag, and raced for the stairs. It was against regulation to exhibit any superpowers out of uniform, but the thought of disappointing Xander was more upsetting than being slapped with a misdemeanor from Biggs.
I’d better keep a lid on these rebellious thoughts.
Reaching the roof, I did a quick heat scan for any warm bodies in the neighboring buildings. Finding nothing near the windows, I deftly dropped 70 stories down into the back alley behind Biggs Enterprises before re-entering the building through the service entrance. The frigid air of the lobby instantly cooled my skin, but my heart was pounding so intensely I was sure everyone around me could hear it.
