“Done,” I repeated, leading the way as we hustled back up the cliffs. Biggs ran the city, so it didn’t surprise me that the Navy was involved in whatever was happening. A sudden wave of concern for Butch’s safety struck me as we reached my car. “Do you think you could call me later? Just so I know that the terrorists haven’t won.”

Understandably, he didn’t laugh at my potentially inappropriate joke as he slid into the passenger side. When his gaze met mine over the console, I could’ve sworn I saw tears forming again. “I’ll do my best, Xan. That’s all I can promise you.”

CHAPTER16

BUTCH

I hit the brick building so violently that I blasted straight through and out the other side.

Fudge humper! His stats weren’t exaggerated…

The blow would have killed a normie—and severely wounded a lesser supe—but besides a few cracked ribs, my biggest complaint was that my ears were ringing.

That’s new.

Agent Penetrate stomped through the rubble to where I lay, his cape billowing in the wind kicked up by the Biggs helicopters circling above. The police force always provided backup for me, but we all knew their rocket launchers wouldn’t do much to a supe other than temporarily slow them down. In the end, it was entirely onmeto protect Big City.

If I fall, the city falls.

And it would be so embarrassing to lose tothisguy.

Besides his cheesy cartoon mobster face, Penetrate wore acape. That kids’ superhero movie with the montage of why supes should skip capes wasn’t far from the truth. Plus, they just looked lame and outdated.

My Lycra was so technologically advanced, it actually knitted itself back together after a hit, while applying first-aid to my already fast-healing injuries. It was also high-velocity-ready and fireproof, which was necessary for anything that came in contact with me when my powers came out to play.

It was probably because of the mild concussion, but my brain chose this moment to recall that Dr. Antihero’s suit could also withstand my firepower. I only knew this because of all the times I’d playfully tossed fireballs his way while stalking him around the Bay.

I wonder who designs his suits?

Why the heck am I even thinking about Antiheroright now?

With a grunt, I rose to my feet and brushed the brick dust off my shoulders, ready to finish off this villain. It was written into my contract that I had to keep the fight going until the press got their footage. Since the television crews hadfinallyarrived, I didn’t have to continue pretending it was a fair fight.

“Your famed Captain Masculine is proving to be a disappointing opponent!” Agent Penetrate sneered, projecting his unexpectedly nasal voice as he dramatically played to the cameras. “The citizens of Big City should prepare for my inevitable rule.”

They never learn.

The cameras were locked on the action—keeping both of us in the wide-angle frame while every reporter and city employee in attendance eagerly awaited what they knew was coming.

Time to earn my paycheck.

Penetrate opened his mouth to monologue some more, but could only screech as I slammed into him—faster than a speeding bullet—and took off into the sky. The wind tore past us so forcefully his headgear was ripped off. This allowed me to glimpse the momentary terror on his ugly face, which pleased me way more than a superhero should ever admit.

That’s villain territory.

Since I had his arms pinned tightly against his body, he reared back and slammed his forehead into my nose, causing the bone to snap and blood to spray all over us.

Mothertrucker that hurt!

All that move accomplished was me dropping him. I watched in irritation as he plummeted to the city streets a mile below, wildly cackling on the way down. Of course, someone with unbreakable bones wouldn’t mind eating pavement, but I didn’t plan on letting him touch the ground.

I spat blood out of my mouth and dove after the villain, focusing every ounce of my power into forming a massive fireball. For a moment, I felt compelled to reach beyond myself for more juice, but quickly banished the ridiculous thought.

A supe’s powers are internal, not external.

Penetrate’s eyes widened in delicious fear as I easily caught up with him, blasting flames outward to envelop both of us in a fiery inferno.

His bones may be unbreakable, but he can still melt.
