Butch tensed as I brought up the app for both the camera and weapons aimed at the single square-foot of space outside the door—along with whoever tracked us down.

Wolfgang.

Somehow, my older brother was outside my lair, wavinghis Hand of Death directly at my hidden camera in that naturally creepy way of his.

When I simply gaped at the live feed on my phone, he dropped his hand and knocked again, tapping out the secret rhythm he, Violentia, and I used as kids to collectively exclude our younger siblings from whatever we were up to.

Oh, now he’s just not playing fair.

Iknewit was stupid to open my door to anyone right now—especially a member of either of our families—but when I glanced at Butch, he firmly nodded, and that gave me the confidence I needed.

It’s two against one, after all.

With a few taps on my phone, the door swung open, and Wolfgang strolled inside as if this were nothing more than a friendly social call. Butch took my hand as the door slammed shut, allowing that almost orgasmic energy flowing between us to amplify.

Of course, my brother’s gaze immediately snapped to the source of our connection, but instead of looking concerned, he smiled in triumph.

Which is way creepier than him waving.

With the air of someone who’d never been afraid a day in his life, Wolfgang began casually wandering around my lair, being nosey as fuck—no doubt trying to psych me out. Just as I was about to send a borrowed fireball up his ass, he dropped onto the couch and slung an arm over the back.

“Father’s dead,” he calmly spoke, meeting my gaze with the ghost of a smirk curling his lips. “I killed him myself.”

CHAPTER41

BUTCH

Even if Xander and I weren’t so intrinsically connected, I would have felt his panic over Wolfgang’s revelation. Apocalypto Man was a nearly unkillable supe, so if the man sitting before us had ended him, we both should be very, very afraid.

But I wasn’t.

I may have only recently acknowledged how messed up my personal situation was, but I knew how our world worked. Any show of weakness was a death sentence. Supes were already the dominant species on earth, but within our cutthroat ranks, it was survival of the deadliest. Only those willing to do what was necessary survived.

Kill or be killed.

“What?” Xander finally choked out. “How? Supescan’tkill their parents. It’s biologically impossible.”

Wolfgang spread his hands wide with a flourish. “And yet, here we are. All thanks to you.”

My mind was whirring, already considering the possibilities of this bombshell. Only interested in the facts. “Tell us how you did it.”

The smile that stretched across Wolfgang’s face was villainous. “You’re getting more intriguing by the day, Butch.” When Xander growled possessively, he rolled his eyes. “Oh, calm down. He has too many muscles for my taste, but I appreciate his bloodlust.”

His attention snapped back to my face. “That’s why you’re asking, right, Captain? You’re thinking this might be your chance to overthrow your handlers?”

Internally, I bristled, but I impassively held his gaze. “It’s how the game is played.”

He smirked and licked his lips. If it wasn’t for the psychotic glimmer in his eyes I didn’t fully trust, I may have smiled back. “To answer your question, I took advantage of our father's sudden paralysis to sneak down to the workshop overnight and drain him dry.”

Like a spider feasting on a fly caught in its web.

Xander gaped at him. “Fuck. That was a ballsy gamble. If it hadn’t worked—”

“I knew it would,” Wolfgang nonchalantly replied. “Because you drew blood on our mother by throwing her power back at her. If the stories told were correct—about a supe’s parents being invincible—you shouldn’t have been able to do that.” He sniffed judgmentally. “If you’d possessed better aim, you could have sent an icicle through her heart.”

“Jesus, Wolfy!” Xander laughed humorlessly. “Why not just say you were using me as an expendable grunt to take the hit if something went wrong?”

It was his brother’s turn to scoff. “That accusation is unfounded and, quite frankly, rude. I’ve been simply biding my time for your powers to re-emerge, so you can finally bring something more to the Suarez name than a loophole for killing normies.”
