“Yes. So I heard through the grapevine your father’s back in town.” He lifted an eyebrow. “I’m sure that has nothing to do with your sudden need to beat up that Kapps guy.”
“Fuck off,” I said, glaring ahead as we emerged into the emptying town center. “Where’s your girl?”
“We broke up.”
“You two were never a good match anyway.”
“You don’t think so?”
I shrugged. “Nah.” The truth was, I always thought she was with him for his money, but I didn’t want to say that. “I have to go to the church.”
“Ah, that’s why you’re acting like more of a dick than normal.”
“It’s just one sermon.”
He paused. “Did you talk to your father about not being a hunter?”
The gas lamps illuminating the sides of the street in a yellow hue flickered as we strolled. I glanced at the starless sky, then at the three-story houses with wraparound porches. My mind was drifting when he nudged me.
“Eli.”
I shook my head to scatter my thoughts. “Oh, yeah. He said no.”
“There’s more money in The Black Horse. Didn’t you show him the numbers?”
“He doesn’t care about that. He sees it as we have enough wealth, and we are blessed because we’re carrying out Zerheus’s will.”
“Do you believe that?”
I grimaced. “No, but fuck if I know what I believe anymore. Look, I got to go. I’ll stop by tomorrow.”

“I look like a porcelain doll.” I looked at the peach frills on my dress and turned to my side to see the reflection of the back. “It even has a tail.”
“It’s not a tail. They’re ruffles, and it’s all the fashion,” Cas said with a smirk.
I shot him a look. “I understand we have to fit in, especially after what happened today with Elijah, but did you really have to get me a dress that looks so ugly?”
“Yes.” He spun me around. “You could almost pass as a lady.”
“Almost.”
Alex sauntered in, wearing emerald green. “Ew.”
“I know. Your dress is at least half decent. Cas is playing favorites again.”
Cas shrugged. “She doesn’t threaten to put snakes in my bed.”
I smiled in the direction of my vianas’ cage. “I should take them.”
“To a church? I’m sure the priests will appreciate deadly snakes being at their sermon.”
I made a sour face. “It’s the hunter’s sermon.”
Alex guided me to sit in the chair in front of my dresser. “You’re already flushed at the thought of him. Can you keep it together if you see him?”
