Wait a second.
No.
She didn’t need Noah or any man to define her. She’d rocked as a top scorer for two years onZoneworldonline. She faced off with Symphis. She totally rocked Noah’s world to the point he lost his mind in the middle of a press conference.
Not pitiful. She was strong and self-reliant.
Her brain wasn’t buying her pep talk. She was about to get fired from her dream job for unfair reasons.
If Noah didn’t want her, then it was his loss. Not hers.
But I miss him so much. Hold it together and leave. She refused to vent in front of this prick.
Josh mimed his hands in a run-away signal.
Oh no he did not.
She leaned toward Josh. The gamer bitch emerged. “Look, you little prick, I need to hear fromMr. Harrisonabout Sam. Not you. So, get off your lazy ass and do your fucking job.”
She pivoted and walked stiffly to the elevator, regretting her behavior. Maybe she wasn’t cut out for a corporate life.
The door opened to reveal Jake.
Great.
Maybe she could swivel a one-eighty and take the stairs.
Jake said, “You’re just the person I was looking for. We need to talk.”
Fucktastic. Here comes the pink slip.
With a nod she stepped inside the elevator, ensuring several feet of air rested between the two of them. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, not while in this dangerous mood.
Her mind whirled with images of Noah and the blonde woman. How had he so easily moved on when she couldn’t contemplate another man touching her? She was tempted to march back into Noah’s office, push him against the wall and remind him exactly what it meant to have good chemistry.
The elevator opened one floor down.
“Come to my office.” Jake marched out of the elevator, expecting her to follow. When she didn’t immediately move, he glanced over his shoulder.
She nodded, not trusting herself to speak politely.
If he hadn’t been her boss, she’d come up with an excuse and flee. She needed alone time to lick her wounds and glue together the pieces of her heart.
Jake waved her into a seat on the opposite side of his desk. She found him difficult to read, but based on his rigid stance when he took his seat, he didn’t plan to shoot the breeze about marketing strategies.
He gazed at her in silence for several uncomfortable seconds. “We’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the hacking incident.”
She kept silent.
“I watched the tape. Whatever you did on Noah’s computer was for show. That was our problem. Someone else gave you the code, didn’t they?”
She continued to stare at him, silent.
“Jesus, Tori. Let me help you. Tell me who gave you the code and secured it.”
“Why would you think I couldn’t hack it and then reprogram it to be a one-time read-only file?”
“Perhaps you could.” He leaned back and tented his hands. “This is a problem.”
