I wince and he shrugs. A petite, raven-haired marketing executive he’d met online, they’d been on and off for the past year.
“We tried,” he says. “But that didn’t seem to matter in the end.”
“I’m sorry. She was sweet.”
He scoffs. “You only met her once and you didn’t even like her.”
“That’s not true!”
“You never like anyone I date.”
“I liked that teacher.”
“That teacher,” he repeats flatly. “You can’t even remember her name.”
Like it’s my fault his exes are so forgettable. “Soph—”
“Emil—”
“Emily!” I slam my hand against the bar in victory. “Emily. Emily the teacher. With the incredibly quiet voice.”
He gives me a fond look. “You’re such a bitch.”
“Emily was years ago,” I remind him. “And didn’t she dump you for that married guy? I’m not even supposed to like her.”
“Alison dumped me for the married guy. Emily ghosted me.”
“You have terrible taste in women.”
“Hey,” he says, one hand going to his heart. “Words hurt, Molly. Maybe terrible women just have a taste in me. Anyway, look who’s talking. What happened to Brandon? You never told me why you broke up with him.”
“He chewed with his mouth open.”
“Seems fair.”
I force a smirk as I gaze down at my drink, twisting one of the rings from my finger. “He got a new job in Seattle,” I explain. “Moved away.”
“And you called it quits?”
“It was a good job,” I say lightly. “But I have no interest in long-distance and I wasn’t about to move there with him. We’d only been together for a few months. I mean, I was still scared to go number two when he was in the apartment.”
“The real second base.”
I kick his leg under the counter and take another sip. “I asked him to stay,” I say after a moment.
The humor fades instantly from his face. “Ah, Moll.”
“I’m fine. Honestly, I’m so used to being alone now I don’t know if I’ll even like it when I find someone Idowant to be with. I’m not sure I know how to bend like that anymore.”
“I don’t want to hear about your sex life.”
“I mean in terms of compromise, asshat.” I glance over his shoulder as the departure board flickers. Our flight status remains unchanged.Delayed. It’s not that I don’t mind the extra time with Andrew, but I would have much preferred to have it while sitting in first-class seats. “How long until they legally have to order us a pizza?”
“You’re the lawyer.”
“Not a pizza lawyer.”
“True. How’s it going anyway?” he asks. “Make anyone rich this month?”
