“Or that we’ll be another few hours at least. Christmas traffic and snow. The perfect combination.”

“That’s shit,” I say. “Are you guys alright?”

“We’re fine, honestly. Just annoyed. Everyone okay there?”

“I wouldn’t know,” I tell her. “I’m not home either. Andrew sent me up with Megan to get things ready.”

“You’re at the cabin?” She sounds bewildered. “But what about the storm?”

“What storm?”

Megan yelps as the window beside us shakes, the glass shuddering violently as a flurry of wind and snow smashes against it.

That storm.

“Donotdrive in this,” Zoe continues. “It’s chaos out here and it hasn’t even got to us yet.” There’s a muffled conversation and then she comes back on. “Okay, new plan. You call your Mam, and Molly will call Andrew and then thoughts and prayers, I guess.”

“Zoe,” Molly snaps.

“Talk soon!”

I leave Zoe to deal with her sister while I rejoin Megan at the window.

“Holy crap,” she whispers, as the wind continues to howl. “Is it supposed to be like that?”

“Maybe it’s because we’re so high up.” I check my phone to confirm, seeing the weather alert pop up. “Or maybe not.”

“How bad?”

Very. But I just shrug, playing it down at the worried furrow of her brow. “Enough that I don’t think we’re getting out of here tonight.”

“I don’t even want to try,” Megan says, peering out at it. “Do you have signal?”

“For now.”

Our eyes meet and I know we’re both on the same page.

“Can we sleep here?” she asks. “Let everyone know?”

“It shouldn’t be a problem,” I say, thinking it through. “I’ll see what time Andrew wants to come up, but we’ll need to be gone by nine if we want to make lunch with your mother.”

“That should be okay.”

We both speak at once.

“The front bedroom should be big enough for both of—”

“I guess I’ll just choose a room and—”

“Yeah, great,” I say quickly, smiling too wide. “Pick away. Ladies’ choice.”

Megan frowns. “What were you going to—”

“Nothing. Same thing.”

She hesitates but doesn’t push me on it. “Okay,” she says slowly. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow then?”

I nod, still smiling like an idiot and stay right where I am as she grabs her bag from the hall and disappears up the stairs.
