“That is…a noteworthy insult.”

She giggled, unexpectedly giddy. This had to be a side-effect of the adrenaline crash. Better than shaking but weird. Super weird.

Winter touched her hand and pointed to the lights on the street. “You are going to be all right. We are nearly there.”

“I lost a lot of blood.”

“It has slowed.”

“Oh, good, that means my ex-fiancé didn’t hit an artery. But I hit him with my car, so that works out, on the cosmic scale.”

“The cosmic scale?”

Mari blinked at the unfamiliar voice. Apparently, the vehicle stopped, presumably because they arrived at the hospital. She would not think too much about it. Winter could handle the details. He liked to be super controlling like that.

“Remain seated. Wait for the stretcher,” the medic said. At least she hoped he was a medic. “I am a medic. You will recover. Do not worry. The male in the back?”

“Karma pancake. Pow! I don’t regret it one bit,” she said, aware that she could not keep her eyes open. She hoped it was safe to pass out, but she didn’t hit her head so it should be fine. Right? Right.

Winter

Events happened at an alarming speed. The medics took his mate into surgery. Winter tried to follow, but a pair of strong Corravian medics held him back.

“I must be with her,” he snarled, struggling to break free.

“You need to be examined,” a male said.

“My condition is acceptable.” His wounds were trivial.

“Like hell I’m letting you bleed out all over my floor. Get your ass in the exam room and calm down. If you do not, I will sedate you.”

Winter ceased to struggle. The sooner the medic finished his pointless exam, the sooner Winter could be at his mate’s side. “I will cooperate, but update me on my mate’s status.” Then, scraping together the last bit of his civility, because manners, “Please.”

“Absolutely. I’d be in a state if that was my mate. Now, how did you get that gash on your forehead?” The medic squirted sterile water into the wound and dabbed with a clean cloth.

Winter gave a brief rundown of events. “Do not let the human male leave.”

The medic stilled. “The unconscious human? What happened to him?”

“What he deserved. I will speak no more on the matter until the authorities arrive,” Winter said, deciding that contacting his lawyer would also be smart. As well as the company’s public relations person. Did they have one? Peaceable would know. He reached for his comm unit, but the medic took it away.

“Do not,” Winter growled, grabbing it back.

“Not until I finish.”

“It is important.” He needed to put a stop of whatever Chase had planned for the next act of this drama.

“Yes, wealthy business males always think they are more important. The more you fight me, the longer this takes.”

Winter’s ears went back. The medic was correct, but he did not like it. “Proceed.”

The medic brought a light to Winter’s face. He closed his eyes and turned away, explaining his condition. “I see. Any vision difficulty? Spots?”
