Nox paused, the cloth hovering over her skin. His gaze snapped to hers. “That is impossible. You are perfect.”

“I’m really not.”

“What is wrong? Nothing.” He liked everything he saw, from the swell of her breasts to the softness of her stomach, the curve of generous hips that were made for a male to grab, and strong legs designed to wrap around him. He liked the creamy expanse of her skin, decorated with freckles. He wanted to map each spot, to learn her body and navigate by touch. For now, he observed.

More than her physical attributes, he liked listening to her speak as she worked through a problem. Her intellect astounded him. How could he ever hope to keep a female as clever as her stimulated? He admired the stubbornness that made her refuse to leave a town that disliked her. The cold, calculating gleam in her eyes moved him beyond words. She was ruthless, and she was his.

Taking his time, he ran the cloth down the valley between her breasts. Gently, mindful of the claws, he caressed her breasts. She leaned into him and gasped as he brushed a thumb over her nipples. The soft taupe-tinted flesh hardened under his touch.

He worked his way down, across the expanse of her stomach and down to her hips. He kneeled, running a fresh cloth down her legs. She was soft here but surprisingly strong in the calves with firm muscle. Hidden strength, like Ruth herself.

One by one, he lifted her feet and cleaned away the mud. She planted a hand on his head for balance, right between his ears.

“Your feet are tiny,” he said, utterly enamored with the delicate toes.

“They’re really not.”

“They’re small, like your ears.”

“Compared to yours, sure.”

“Are you saying you like my big ears?” He purred with approval. “That’s quite the compliment. I’d thank you but I doubt you could hear me with those minuscule ears.”

Her laughter was the best sound on this or any other planet. She moved her hand to caress his ears. He leaned into her touch, letting her rub her scent on him. If another Tal scented her on that intimate spot, they’d know she claimed him. It was sneaky, but he wasn’t above using tricks. He’d do anything to win his ruthless mate.

“Turn around,” he ordered.

He worked his way up, relishing the journey up her legs to where they joined her ass. The twin globes were wonderfully pliant. He wanted to sink his fangs into her. As a compromise, he planted a kiss in the small of her back just where it met her bottom, where her tail would be if she had one.

He took his time with her back, arms, and shoulders. He lifted her partially dry hair to expose the back of her neck. This spot, this hidden spot, he needed to leave his mark. It was a dark, feral need.

Nox pressed his lips to the spot. He licked, the salt of her skin bursting on his tongue. She shivered. His primal drive overrode reason.

The growl that emanated from him sounded unreal.

Fangs bit down, not piercing the skin but hard enough to leave a mark. He pushed her down until she was on her knees, head pressed against the floor.

Ruth

He bit her.

Ruth was too stunned to yelp or resist. A gut feeling told her that resisting his bite wouldn’t end well. She went still.

His teeth had a firm grip on her, but pain never came. When he pushed her to the floor, she went willingly. Her cheek pressed against the floor.

His hand replaced his teeth, holding the back of her neck firmly to discourage movement, while his other hand spread her thighs.

She was completely exposed, ass in the air and face pressed to the floor.

She loved it.

“Do not move,” he ordered, releasing her neck.

For a time, nothing happened. The wind grew louder, or perhaps that was the blood roaring in her veins.

“Ruth, are you well?”

“Yes.”
