“Yes,” I moan softly. The couch creaks beneath us as he thrusts into me, filling me up. His hand leaves my jaw and his fingers weave into my hair, tugging slightly. When I gasp, he plunders my mouth with his tongue.

“Codi.” I’m sweating, panting, entirely his to conquer and loving every second of it. Heat builds up within me. “I’m so close.”

“Come for me,” he commands me, nipping my lower lip.

“I’m coming—”

He locks eyes with me, his hot cock plunging into me and finally sending me over the edge. Waves of toe-curling pleasure spill over me as I scream his name. I stare back at him as he grunts. A few more thrusts, and he pulses inside me. I ride out the climax we share until it’s over, then he kisses me deeply.

Dizzy from our hurried lovemaking, I snuggle into his body, and he holds me close, caressing, petting. I reacquaint myself with his taste and touch. It was only one night, but it was a night I thought I’d lost him forever. It felt like an eternity. I never want to experience it, ever again.

“Codi,” I murmur, after I’ve had a chance to settle down and think. “What happened last night?”

He adjusts his softening cock, glancing toward the sunlight gleaming through my curtains in the living room window and zips himself up. I manage to put my pants back on as he pulls me to sit in his lap.

“I used to belong to a woman named Reagan Walter. She named me Ethan.”

“I know that much,” I say, settling in and trying to adjust my disheveled hair. “But what happened?”

He tells me everything—about Chris and Reagan Walter, their crumbling volatile marriage, how they teeter from hate to love to hate again. He explains precisely what happened—that Reagan used him. My initial instinct is one of pure anger and disgust, but as I let loose a river of expletives, Codi stops me with a shake of his head.

“It’s not like that, Denise. It was wrong, yes, but the woman is utterly miserable. I don’t feel any anger for what was done. I pity her,” he says quietly, rubbing my back.

“Still,” I grumble, leaning into him. “She’ll never touch you again, if I have any say.”

He grins. “Is that jealousy I hear?”

“Yes,” I say flatly without missing a beat. He chuckles and pulls me into a tight embrace. “Codi, do you love me?”

He caresses my leg and cups my rear as he holds me. “I don’t think BioNex intended for me to feel, let alone love, but I cannot describe it. I want to care for you, protect you. For your entire life. Is that what love is?”

I thought I couldn’t adore him anymore than I already do, but he proves me wrong. I chuckle. “Yes, Codi. That’s what love is.”

“Then I do. I love you, Denise.”

When Oliver returns, he opens the door, and Lucas flies into the house with a joyous shout.

“Codi! You’re back!”

I slip out of his lap just in time for Codi to catch him and pull him into a hug. Lucas is crying, his lips quivering and eyes red as he sniffles.

Oliver chuckles. “You’re literally all I heard about, the entire drive here. He missed you."

As Codi takes Lucas into the living room, I turn to Oliver. “I don’t know what I would've done without you.”

“You mean the world to Becca,” Oliver replies. “And to me.” He smiles. “Call me if you need me again."

I grab him and yank him into a tight hug, which he steps into clumsily as our bodies collide. “Thank you.”

He chuckles awkwardly and wraps his arms around me, squeezing me once and giving me a pat before letting me go and heading back to his car.

I swiftly go to find my son, and find him enveloped in Codi’s arms, rocking and trying to soothe him. “Don’t cry. I’m here.”

“But what if the bad lady takes you?” Lucas’s words are muffled, his head buried in Codi’s shoulder. I caress my son’s hair as Codi and I exchange adoring looks.

“She won’t ever take me away from you again,” Codi says. “I’ll make sure of it. Okay?”

Lucas nods, hugging Codi’s broad shoulders with his little hands. “Okay.” He sniffles. “Will you tell me a bedtime story?”
