He licks his lips, voice soft. “I’m starting to see that.”
We stare at one another for a long time, the tension between us thick. I want to kiss him so damn badly.
“Come on.” He gets to his feet, dusting himself off before he holds out his hand. “Walk on the beach with me? The sun is setting, and it’s really beautiful.”
You’re beautiful.
“I’d love to.”
Taking his hand, I let him pull me to my feet. He gives me a shy smile as we walk to the water.
As we walk along the beach, hand in hand, we talk about everything. We end up talking about some funny things thathappened to us in our past, each of us laughing at the other's expense.
By the time we get back to our towel, it’s dark, and there are only a few people left on the beach.
As we pack up, I can’t help but feel good. Like this is exactly what we needed.
Eli was relaxed. He opened up. He smiled and laughed and wasn’t so nervous. I hope I get to see this side of him more.
“Thanks,” Eli says as we pull up to his house.
“For what?” I ask, shutting the car off.
“For taking me out. It was fun.”
“It was.”
“Kai?”
“Yeah?”
“Come in and hang out with me and Laney, please?” He looks over at me with big eyes. “I’m not ready for the night to end.”
My heart thunders in my chest as I reach up and cup his face. “Yeah, sweet boy. I’d love to.”
He gives me a smile that hits me right in the heart, and I know in this moment, I’d do anything this man asks me to. Anything to see him happy and smiling.
Chapter 18
Delaney
“Oh, that's a good one!” I gush as I look back at the photo I'd just taken before lifting the camera up to take more.
“Laney,” Winter laughs. “I thought it was my job to take photos of the baseball team?”
“It is.” I look over at her, blinking.
“Then why have you taken about a hundred photos of Eli?” she grins, eyes swimming with amusement.
“Because he’s my boyfriend. And it’s his first game of the year,” I say as if it’s obvious.
“Are you going to take photos of any of the other players?” She raises a brow.
“Ah, no. That's your job, remember? Girl, keep up.” I bring the camera up to take another photo as she laughs.
Eli is at bat, and the other team is up by two. Eli needs to get a good hit, or they’re going to lose.
I know nothing about baseball. Eli has talked about the game in the past, but I kind of zoned out, too distracted by his lips, the way he smelled, and how he lit up talking about something he enjoyed.
