“E or Coke?”
“None of your business.” Owen’s face scrunches up.
“Based off the nose bleed, I’m gonna say coke. What the fuck, man? Drugs? Really?”
“Don’t judge me.” Owen pushes at Kai. “You don’t know me.”
“Clearly neither do we.” Logan appears beside me, pure fury on his face. “What the fuck is going on with you? Since when do you do drugs?”
“None of your business,” Owen mumbles, getting to his feet. “It’s none of any of your business. Just leave me alone.”
My hand covers my mouth as I try not to cry, the sob lodged in my throat. How could this go from one of the best days of my life to one of the worst?
Is this something he’s done before? Why would he use drugs? Why would he say the things he said? I care about Owen. I’ve let him know, right? He’s gotta know that, right??
“Owen.” I chase after him as he makes his way outside.
The cold snow bites into my feet, but I don’t care as I follow after him.
“Just leave me alone.”
“No,” I say firmly, grabbing his arm. “Whatever is going on, you can tell me.”
“Why do you care?” he slurs, swinging his bloodshot eyes my way.”
“Because I do. I care about you a lot, Owen. I’m sorry if I didn’t show you that enough. I promise I will do better.”
“Don’t bother.” He steps back. “You deserve better than a fuck up like me.”
“What are you talking about?” My brows furrow. “You’re not a fuck up.”
“Oh, I am.” He tosses his head back and laughs. “Biggest fuck up in the family.”
He’s scaring me right now. I don’t know how to respond, what to say.
“I’ve got him,” Logan sighs, stepping around me. “Come on, big guy. Let’s get you back to the cabin.”
“I want to go home,” Owen slurs. “I don’t want to be here.”
“Come on, Sweetheart. Logan’s got him.” Kai scoops me up into his arms bridal style.
Unsure what to do or what to say, I bury my face in Kai’s neck and let myself cry.
Kai and Eli take care of me, getting me dressed and in the rental car to head back to the cabin. When we get there, there's a taxi waiting, the engine running.
“What's going on?” Kai asks as he gets out of the car.
I sit in the front seat of the car watching as Logan carries bags outside. He brings them to the trunk of the taxi before coming over to the car. I roll the window down, my stomach sinking, my heart racing.
What did I do? How can I fix this? Why are they leaving?
“Logan,” my voice comes out broken.
“Shhhh.” Logan cups my cheek and leans in, pressing a soft kiss to my lips. “Everything will be okay, baby. I promise. I’m not sure what’s going on with Owen. Maybe it has something to do with his school? I know some stuff was going on with his grades last year, and his spot on the team was at risk. Maybe it has something to do with that.”
“What?” My eyes widen. “I–I didn’t know.” Owen always made it seem like life was great, that everything was fine. He was suffering, and I didn’t know.
Maybe he was right. I was so caught up with everything Logan, I didn’t give Owen the time he deserved. The same with Eli.
