“Her mom?”

“Oh, I think she’s at work.”

“Think?”What the hell is going on?

“Uh-huh. And I also think I’m going to pass out.”

“Sit down and start with what happened,” he said, running through the parking lot and climbing into his car. He didn’t even have the door shut before he pushed the ignition button, the engine firing up as he snapped his cell into the holder.

“She fell and she’s bleeding. And there’s so much blood. And you know how I get with blood.” Maddison gagged.

“I know, honey,” he said, pulling out of the parking lot. He hit a red light and looked at his screen. “Turn the phone back and show me what we’re dealing with.”

Maddison turned the phone. After a quick glance he sighed, relieved that it was just a split chin. “She’s going to be okay. It’s just a cut.”

“But there’s so much blood.”Gak!

“Head wounds always look worse than they are.” He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, agitated. “It’s probably just a little cut.”

“Don’t say wounds.”Gak. Gak.

Shit! Colin knew exactly what that sound meant and what would follow. Last time Maddison got a cut knee, she passed out and still managed to throw up all over his shirt.

“Take a deep breath.”

Sitting on the porch steps, Maddie put her head between her knees and took a few deep breaths. “What do I do?” she asked, her voice muffled from her need-a-paper-bag position.

“Grab an adult.” At the green light, he tore through the intersection, turning into his neighborhood.

“I’m the only adult here.”

“Teagan left her kids alone?”

“Kind of. Harley hired me to be her PA.”

Great, a child leading children. “We’ll circle back to that later.”

Maddie lifted her head and looked directly into the camera. “Fantastic, looking forward to that. Since our talks work out so great for me.”

“Did you call her mom?”

“I’m afraid to call. Cuz I’m also supposed to be the nanny and I don’t want to lose this job.”

When the hell had she started nannying?

On the one hand, he was relieved that Maddison was safe and that this crisis wasn’t over a boy, but his gut told him that there was a part to this story he was missing. A big part.

“Hold tight, I’ll call her mom.” Damn, he didn’t have Teagan’s number. “Actually, do you have an emergency number?”

“I’m not a total idiot.” She sniffled. “But can you call her?”

“This is your responsibility. The second you took the job, you agreed to be the responsible party. How are you going to move across country if you can’t handle a little blood?”

“It isn’t a little.”Gak. Gak.“It’s a lot because head wounds look worse than they are.”

He rolled his eyes. “This is part of babysitting, so text her mom about what’s going on.”

“Okay, but don’t hang up.”
