“Lust is a good scrambler,” came his low voice.

“Which is why we should probably think through the pitfalls.”

“We do that, and we might as well go back to avoiding each other.”

“I don’t want that.” She wanted him in her life somehow, but she didn’t know what that might entail. They were neighbors, his daughter was her babysitter and, based on tonight, her daughters loved the entire West family. And in a way—a very distant and nostalgic way—she loved Colin too.

When wanting overshadowed reason, people got hurt. In her experience, nothing good came from going on pure emotion.

“Maybe we should wait until we don’t have our hands all over each other before we make a decision.”

“I think you’re forgetting how this works.”

She remembered exactly how this worked, especially with Colin. And she didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

“Maybe we should take things slow. See how we feel tomorrow.”

“That sounds like the responsible thing to do.”

“Then why are you pulling me closer?” she whispered.

He grinned, that sexy boyish grin that made her clothes want to melt right off. “Sweetheart, you’re the one doing the pulling.”

Teagan looked down to find her hands fisted in his shirt. “Whoops.” But she didn’t let go. “I guess I’m a little confused on what I want.”

“You said as much the other day.”

Responsible Teagan told her to abort while Girl on Fire Teagan told her to be bold and go after what she wanted without apology. And right then she wanted Colin.

He started to back away, but she held on, even pulling him closer. “I know.” She ran her hands up his chest to the back of his neck. “I have something to tell you.”

“I’m all ears.”

“It’s the fourth thank-you.”

His grin was sleepy and sexy. “I have a feeling four is going to be my new favorite number.”

So did she. She liked her men tall, dark, and kind, with a gentle soul. She liked a man who fiercely protected and cared for those in his world. Once upon a time, she’d been one of those people and, right then, she wanted to go back to being his person.

She pulled his head down so she could reach his lips and then went after what she wanted.

Colin.

“Thank you for being you,” she said against his mouth, then brushed her lips against his, back and forth, back and forth. A slow, gentle repetition that quickly became anything but. His hands tightened on her hips, his thumbs on the move until they were millimeters from her breasts. Then with a rough groan he took over.

His mouth opened on hers, proving that, after all these years, the chemistry was still explosive. The only thing different was that they were both more experienced.

She had a hard time breathing, let alone thinking, because it was a kiss to end all kisses. It was no teenage kiss. Just like the man himself, he’d only gotten better.

After a long, luscious moment he pulled back. “I guess that answers that question.”

Oh yeah, it was still there.
