The asshole fell onto the floor and held his belly as he kept laughing. “Who knew you were so fucking dense?”
I narrowed my eyes slightly. “Can you stop insulting me?”
He sat and crisscrossed his legs as he took a deep breath, finally calming himself down. “Anderson, Kennedy is a big girl. She would have been fine.”
“I wasn’t willing to take the risk, okay?” I groaned. “Forget I told you anything. Let it go.”
“Accept you like her, and I’llgladlylet it go.”
“I. Don’t. Like. Her.” I enunciated every word through clenched teeth. Sometimes I wanted to smack Hayes’s head against the wall, becausefuck, was he annoying.
He was right, but still annoying.
He scoffed and stared at me in disbelief. “I’m your best friend. You can admit it to me.”
I closed my eyes and cracked my neck to let go of some of the tension that was creeping up my shoulders from this conversation. “Okay,” I relented. “I have the tiniest crush on her. Always have,” I mumbled.
“I mean, yeah, all of us know that already. You’re not slick, you know?” Hayes raised an eyebrow. “But dude…fake dating? Seriously?”
“I came up with this idea to help her.”
I didn’t know what I could have said to make him believeme, but it was the truth. I’d witnessed Kennedy work her ass off since she stepped foot into this place. If anyone deserved the promotion, it was her. She didn’t deserve to lose a huge opportunity because of a picture that was taken out of context.
“Fair. I believe you. I know the world thinks you’re a dick, but you’re a decent man. You saw the love of your life?—”
I cut him off. “I don’tloveher. I just can’t get her out of my head, and I wouldn’t mind if we, I don’t know…” I shrugged. “Slept together once, so I can finally get her off my system.”
He gave me a sly smile. “You wanna be her rebound?”
Her rebound,of course. How hadn’t I thought about it before? It was the perfect solution to this little dilemma.
Except, she didn’t like me. So, how exactly was I going to convince her to sleep with me?
“Yeah.” I nodded. “I wouldn’t mind being her boy toy until she gets over her shitty ex.”
“Those are big shoes to fill. She was engaged, right?”
“For three years,” I murmured. “I can’t believe she was going to marry that asshole.”
“Jealous much?” He mocked.
“Shut the fuck up,” I said.
I hadnoreason to be jealous of him. He was the epitome of a finance bro. With his blond hair and perfect white teeth. The guy hadn’t done a hard day of work—a total trust fund kid if I’d ever seen one. I pictured Kennedy with someone who could match her challenging energy, but also someone who could lift her and be her number one supporter. And let’s just sayJoe-the-Ken-Dollgave the most misogynistic vibes. I could tell by looking at him that he was a total piece of shit.
Hayes clasped his hands and stood to grab his phone from the sound system. His eyes sparkled, and knowing Wesley fucking Hayes, when those green eyes danced with mirth, I hadto start coming up with different scenarios on how to dig myself out of whatever hole he was about to drag me into.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“Time to summon the Ka-Chow Kings,” he exclaimed eagerly.
“No,” I growled and stood from the bench, almost tripping onto the mat as I tried to reach for his phone. I was a second too late, because my phone pinged with a text.
With a defeated sigh, I brought my phone out of my pocket as text notifications started filtering in.
