Thank God, Azure is coming with us. Clearly, we need a sex buffer.

Nathan parks the Hummer in the narrow driveway of a cute little house in College Park. I text Azure we’re here, but he must have noticed the SUV because he’s already locking his front door.

His all-black outfit isn’t out of the ordinary for him. Even his hair looks the same. He slings a drawstring backpack onto his shoulder. It’s too small for his costume to be inside.

I roll down the window. “I thought you were dressing up?”

“I am.”

“That’s not a costume.” I hang my head out the window as he climbs into the seat behind mine. Once he’s inside the Hummer, I twist the other way and gesture to his normal clothes. “Explain how this is a costume.”

Nathan turns to greet him. “Azure? I’m Nathan. Nice to meet you.”

They shake hands. “Thanks for the ride,” Azure says.

“No problem.”

I glare at Nathan.

“What?” He lifts one shoulder with an innocent shrug.

“I was going to introduce you right after Azure tells me what kind of costume that’s supposed to be.”

“And I saved you the trouble.”

I roll my eyes and direct my attention to Azure as Nathan pulls out of the driveway. “If I’d have known we were doing the whole normal clothes are costumes, I would have saved myself the trouble of squeezing into these shorts.”

Azure leans forward and glances at my outfit. “Those are shorts?”

“Har, har.”

“You make a good Harley Quinn, especially with the red hair.”

“It’s dated, Azure. People will look at me and think I missed the memo that says Harley Quinn costumes are no longer in.”

Nathan gives me a sideways glance. “No guy will be thinking that, I guarantee.”

Azure laughs. “He’s right. And since when do you care what other people think?”

I don’t have a response to that.

“Besides, all the attention will be on Nathan. They’ll think he’s a Dallas Cowboys player.”

Nathan beams with pride. “See? He gets my costume.”

Azure says, “I meant they’ll think you’re arealplayer for the Dallas Cowboys, based on your physique and sexual appeal.”

My bottom lip drops. “Are you flirting with my man?” I tease Azure and realize my error. Not my man.“My friend,” I correct.

Nathan’s posture stiffens. He swings a sharp left turn.

I grip the seat to keep from falling over. Awkward silence fills the car.

Should I face forward and stare at the road? Is the conversation over? What is happening here?

To my relief, Azure says, “Guess what I am?”

“As in your costume?”
