I sighed. “I’ll go.”

“Thank you,” she said with a breath of relief. She rose to her feet and grabbed the garment bags. “We should try these on and make sure they fit.”

An hour later, I stood in front of the mirror on the back of my bedroom door, wearing the exact dress Raysa had sketched yesterday. It wasn’t as heavy as it looked, fit perfectly, and felt wonderful against my skin. For the first time ever, I thought I looked beautiful. I wondered what Caiden would think, then I pushed the thought away.

After changing out of the dress and into my robe, I left to find Raysa. She was in the family room, hanging her dress back in the garment bag.

“Raysa?” I said, drawing her attention. “Before Alliston passed away, he said something about Caiden and me being foretold. And last night, Caiden said I wasn’t ready to hear the truth. Do you know what any of that means?”

She thought for a long moment. “It can only mean there is a prophecy about the two of you. There is a prophet, Virgil. You’d know him as Merlin the wizard. He foretells prophecies but only shares them with the people they’re about.”

“Then it couldn’t have been about Caiden and me because I would know the prophecy. Right?”

“Unless Virgil couldn’t find you. It took Caiden nearly a year, and if it weren’t for the tip I received from Gabriel, it would have taken me just as long. If not longer.”

“Caiden was searching for me for a year before we met?”

Raysa nodded. “He was determined to stay far away from Bianca and just as determined to find you.”

Raysa said it like I should be pleased. In a way, I was.

“We or I need to meet this Virgil and find out what he said.” Something inside was pushing me to do this. I went to my room to get dressed.

“It’s not that simple,” Raysa called out, following me.

I faced her.

“We need to make an appointment first. I can do that, but it will take some time.”

“An appointment?” My voice shot up.

“He’s a busy man,” she said. “He’s been around for a long time and knows quite a lot of people. I’ll tell you what.” She continued to my room and took the poetry book from my desk. “I’ll do what I can to get us in with Virgil ASAP, if you promise to read and learn as much as you can about sentries, vows, the two realms, and the balance between them. All of it is vital information. The knowledge is potent and might even help trigger your powers.”

“Done.” I took the book, wondering why I’d shirked reading it. “When will you be back? And what about all of these?” I glanced at the trail of bags, leading from the hallway to the family room.

“Not to worry. I’ll send someone to fetch them. As for when I’ll return, I don’t know. Virgil’s not easy to contact. If it takes too long, I’ll make sure someone checks on you.”

“Why? I thought I was protected in the house?” Did she think I needed a bodyguard? That didn’t make me feel safe.

“You are. It’s for my peace of mind.”

I sure hoped so.

I Had To See You

Thirty minutes had passed, and I hadn’t moved since Raysa left. I couldn’t stop thinking about Caiden and Bianca. I hated the jealousy brewing inside me over her being with him at the manor, while I was here, imprisoned. I couldn’t even go outside to relax.

I pulled off my robe to change but ended up scrutinizing my figure instead. I still wore the white lacy bra and panty set Raysa insisted I put on under the dress. They were pretty and, though I was no Victoria’s Secret model, the pieces did make me look almost curvy.

I glanced at my petite physique in the mirror and couldn’t believe my eyes. I moved closer to my reflection and zeroed in on my lips. They were fuchsia, but I didn’t have on lipstick. I grabbed a tissue and tried to wipe away the color, but it didn’t work. This close to my reflection, my eyes looked more lilac than blue, and my dark lashes had doubled in length.

Assuming it was a goddess thing, but still a little freaked out, I dashed downstairs to the kitchen. My phone was on the counter and I wanted to ask Raysa what she thought.

When I passed through the family room, the front door swung open. I froze.

A dark figure entered the foyer and continued in my direction.
