“The Nightingales. It’s part of an elite task force not many people know about. Seth and I were in the inaugural class.”

“How did you end up the boss?” It comes out sultry, but I am genuinely curious.

“I’m the boss because I worked my ass off. The genius range IQ didn’t hurt either.” He smirks.

“What is it with you rich people? You can’t be happy being gorgeous and wealthy? You have to take all the brains, too?” I tease.

“Gorgeous, huh? Red, you flatter me, but if you keep looking at me like that, you won’t get any writing done tonight.”

I gulp audibly, and he chuckles.

“I love that you can’t hide your reactions from me, sweetheart. It makes playing your body so much more fun.”

“Holy, geez.” Fanning myself, I look from Loki to my screen and back again.

“Writing first, Red. Then I’m going to bury myself so deep inside of you, you’ll never ask to see another toy as long as you live.”

My pussy responds to his words, and I have to shift in my seat, but I know he’s right. I have a deadline, and as much as I would love to toss my computer aside and jump him, I’m still too new an author. It’s such a fickle industry. I can’t afford to allow anyone to label me in a negative light. It’s why, for the first time in my life, I stick to deadlines.

“Okay, give me three hours.”

He grins like it’s a challenge, and I start the clock.

Holy shit, this man is going to ruin me for life.

Chapter 27

“How long?” My voice is deadly calm, but the rage burning from within sets my skin on fire.

“From what I can tell, it’s been a few years, at least,” Ryan states in his signature monotone.

Ryan owns EnVision Securities—the company my family has used for as long as I can remember, and the company I plan to acquire now that he’s retiring.

“Why the fuck weren’t Loki or I informed?” Seth screams. “We’ve been out in the field every goddamn day. He put his life on the line every fucking day. No one thought it would be beneficial to let him know that his own brother was working for our side?”

“What if Loki had killed Luca in that warehouse?” I ask. “Who is running this operation?”

“Michael Anderson.” Ryan’s voice comes through the speaker like molasses, and I want to fucking throat punch the guy.

“Anderson? Why does that sound so familiar?” I ask. “Where do I know him from?”

“He’s the agent that went to your house after Loki’s parents were killed,” Seth rumbles.

What the hell?

“What else do you know, Ryan?”

“Just that Luca wants to talk to Loki, and they’re putting all available resources into making that happen,” he states vaguely.

“Do they know where Loki is?” Seth asks, concerned.

“No, and it’s pissing everyone off. Whatever you guys have done to hide him is better than anything any branch of our government can do. I’m impressed. The three of you will do well with EnVision. I’m sure of it now.”

That little admission is as close to fatherly admiration I’ve had in years, and it irritates me that it affects me so much.

“Thank you, Ryan. Anything else?”
