“You’re right.”

My head whips to hers.

“You’re broken until you decide it’s time to move on from the pain. I just hope you don’t wait so long that you lose something as precious as true love. I know you’re hurtin’, Locket. I feel it deep in these old bones. But I can’t fix you, and I’m beginnin’ to think you can’t fix yourself either.”

Well, isn’t that just the final dagger to the heart?

“As I said, Lex. I don’t know what you’ve been through, but if ya ain’t gonna talk to me, I think it’s time you went to see someone. Dr. Marshall told me Sarah Green in Danville is an excellent therapist. So if you won’t talk to me or Easton, who has been here by your side every day, I think you better go see what she has to say.”

“You think I’m crazy, too?” My voice is as weak as it’s ever been. The one person who has always been in my corner doesn’t believe in me anymore.

“No, Locket. I don’t think you’re crazy. I think you’ve been through more than one heart, and mind, can take, and you need some help to work through the feelings that brings. You’re angry, and you’re hurting. You’re drowning in your own feelings. I can throw you the life raft, but I can’t breathe for you. Let yourself breathe again, Lexi, before you suffocate in grief.”

I don’t notice the tears until they splash in my hand. GG moves in quickly for a hug and rocks me back and forth like I’m a little girl again. It was so much easier when she could kiss my booboos and make me better.

“I’m bringing some lunch into town for Seth and his Ari. Think about what I said. Sarah’s number is on the wall next to the phone.”

Wait, lunch? What time is it?Grabbing at my phone, I see it’s after one in the afternoon.Holy shit.I haven’t slept that late since I was a teenager. I roll back to GG, but she’s already gone.

Thinking about Seth, I hope he’s fairing okay. Our town can be overwhelming without a buffer, so I text him.

Lexi: Hope you’re doing okay out there in the wild.

Lexi: You’ll probably need a drink or ten by the time you get back to the lodge, so I’ll take you to the Packing House tonight. Feel free to invite anyone you may meet on your excursions.

Seth: Thanks. WTF did I get dragged into?

Lexi: Welcome to the chaos?

Seth: Fucking chaos is right.

Just because I don’t want to be a part of GG’s matchmaking process doesn’t mean I can’t secretly hope for the best for everyone else.

Climbing out of bed, I make my way to the hall and tumble over a pair of legs sprawled out, taking up the entire floor. Strong hands catch me before I hit the ground. Hands that my body knows well.

“What the fuck, Beast? What are you doing out here? Eavesdropping?”

“Not intentionally, but yes,” he replies unapologetically. “And I’m sorry, but not for eavesdropping.”

As I clamber to get to my feet, Easton untangles our limbs with more grace than I have at the moment, and we both rise. The hallway forces us to stand too close, so I make a beeline for the kitchen.

“Then what the hell are you sorry about?” I ask, reaching for a coffee mug.

“That GG told you I love you before I did.” His voice is quiet but strong in his conviction.

The mug slips from my hands and shatters on the tile.

“Shit. Don’t move, Locket. Let me get a broom.”

“Don’t call me Locket,” I screech. He did not just say he loves me.

“Another good story to tell, huh?”

“What?”

He grins. “We can say the first time I told you I loved you was glass shatteringly good.”

“No. No, Easton. You don’t love me.”
