Welcoming him back into my world releases the last part of my heart that pain had locked away.

“I can’t, Easton. As much as I loved being part of your family, the second Macomb finds out I turned on him, he’ll kill me. I can’t put you in that kind of danger.”

Staring at him, I shake my head. “I think it’s been too long.”

“What do you mean? You won’t help me find Pacen? East, I’ve known her for a long time. She’s not capable of what Ashton’s accusing her of. I’d bet my life on it.”

“You’re done laying down your life, Dill. I meant you’ve been gone so long you forget how we do things around here. We take care of own.” My words break as emotion consumes me. My mind and heart are at war for what’s right. It’s hard to just turn off eight years of feelings, but I know Ashton. He leaves no stone unturned. So if he believes Dillon, I should, too.

“I-I …” he stutters while shaking his head no.

“I learned recently that feelings don’t change overnight. We have work to do, but we were always stronger together.”

Dillon stares at me, obviously confused by my words. Hell, I’m shocking myself. Two days ago, I never would have imagined I’d be sitting here with him, let alone welcoming him to the chaos, but here we are.

“Trust will take time, but forgiveness is an easier road to take, and right now, I need all the easy I can get. I-I just need to know …”

“Ness never stopped loving you, East. You were her shining star. Her biggest regret was that our actions might dim your light. I’m sorry that it did for so long.”

His words are like a punch to the throat, and I’m having trouble keeping the tears at bay. The relief of knowing the two people I loved more than life itself didn’t betray me after all is more than I can handle.

“Thank you, Dill. Let’s get you out of here, okay? You should probably come back to the lodge with me. Ashton and Loki will know how to help you. Can you believe they ended up actually being super-spies?”

His laughter is like a salve over an old wound, and I feel a little piece of my soul mend.

“You always said they’d end up in the CIA.” He chuckles.

“Even better than that. Special Ops—SIA.”

“No shit?” he says, obviously impressed.

As we exit the old building, I feel lighter than I can remember being in the recent years. This must be what Lexi meant by working on me. She was right, but isn’t she always? With this piece of my past behind me, I’m ready to grab my future. I’m ready to make Lexi mine.

Chapter 41

Lexi

Easton: I’m ready.

Lexi: Ready for what?

Easton: To make you mine.

Lexi: ???

Easton: Are you ready to be my wife?

Lexi: We’ve already covered that. Legally, I am.

Easton: That’s a piece of paper. Are you, Lexi Mae, ready to be my wife?

I can’t help but smile.

“How long are you going to punish him?” Colton asks from across the room.

“Colty! That’s none of your business. He said some pretty shitty things,” Rylan scolds.

I knew I liked this girl. Her relationship with Halton is another story, though. I have noticed they’re never in the same room, but I did catch them in the hallway yesterday. I pretended not to see their angry stance, but a blind bat couldn’t miss that kind of tension.
