Space, we need space. Twisting my body away from his, I slip free and step into the small family room.
“What did you need to discuss, Easton?” I ask in the most professional voice I can summon.
“Us.”
“Bah. Huh? What? Us? There’s no us, Easton. What the hell are you talking about?”
“Not yet, but there can be.”
“No.”
“No? That’s it? No conversation about the mind-blowing sex we had? No conversation about the next steps. Just no?”
“What do you expect from me, East? A marriage proposal? We had sex. Once. So what? It was good, I’ll give you that, but there’s no future here beyond boss and employee. Nothing. Never.”
Even as the words leave my mouth, they cause me pain. There’s no denying the connection Easton and I have is explosive, but explosive chemistry leads to heartache. I am a direct line to it, and I don’t want that for him.
When he doesn’t respond, I continue to ramble, “One little mistake doesn’t make a relationship, East. I’m not relationship material anymore, and fuck buddies with you has disaster written all over it. Trust me. I’m not worth the effort.”
The world spins all around me as Easton pulls me to his chest so fast I see stars. With his hands on either side of my face, he grinds out his words.
“You can say we were a mistake. You can even say what we did wasgood, even though we both know that’s a fucking lie. You can spend your days hiding from your feelings. What you can’t do, is tell me how to feel about it. So, you can tell me you’re not worth the effort, but I’ll disagree. You can tell me it wasgood, and I’ll disagree. You can tell me we are a fucking mistake, and I’ll disagree because if you ask me, Locket, your perception is off.”
“You’re my boss,” I say meekly.
“And I’ll rewrite the entire employee handbook if that’s what it takes.”
“It was a mistake.”
His face inches closer to mine. “If it was, it’s one I want to make over and over again.” Easton’s voice is gruff with honesty.
“We can’t?” It comes out as a question, and that’s when I know my resolve around this man is non-existent.
“We can, Locket.” The words ghost over my lips. If I pouted even the tiniest bit, our lips would touch.
“One more little mistake?” My voice comes out in a squeak and my eyes go wide.
“Sweetheart, I’ll make all the mistakes you’ll allow.” His lips crash over mine, and I feel my resolve slipping with this kiss. I have to stop him. I can’t keep doing this when there is no future for us. I have no future.
“Stop overthinking this and fucking kiss me, Lexi.”
A demand like that from anyone else would result in a swift kick to the nuts. But from Easton’s lips, at this moment, it makes me want to strip naked and have him kiss me everywhere.
The growl that vibrates throughout his chest teases my nipples that have hardened in my arousal. It causes an ache so deep inside of me, I don’t know that it’ll ever be soothed.
“Lexi-con? You still here?”
I pull away from Easton so fast I trip over my suitcase and land flat on my ass with a thud.Jesus, that’s going to leave a mark.As if Easton had the same thought, I can see his dirty thoughts of kissing it better play over his face.
“What the … What’s up, buttercup?”
“What are you doing here, Colt?” Easton barks.
“I think the better question is, what areyoudoing here?”
Ignoring him, Easton reaches down and hauls me to my feet.
“You scared the shit out of her, and she tripped over her suitcase. Don’t you knock?” East grumbles.
