“You really want to date me?”
“Well, this wasn’t the third date I had in mind, but fuck yes. I can’t think of anything better than dating my wife.”
It’s the first time she hasn’t flinched when I call her that, and relief floods my chest.
“Ash said we could get divorced now …”
“We could,” I agree, “but I think I’d like to date you for a while first.”
“I can’t promise anything, Beast. I’m still broken.”
“We’re all a little broken, Locket. It’s how you put yourself back together that matters.”
That night, when we crawl into our bed, I feel hopeful for the first time in years … which is pretty fucked up, considering all the shit happening around us. However, with Lexi in my arms, I fall asleep hopeful nonetheless.
Chapter 34
Lexi
“Lexi-con? Where are you?” Colton’s voice rings out.
It’s been a month since I agreed to date Easton. The lodge has also been overrun with Westbrooks for an entire month, and I’m starting to regret my decision.
“I’m out back,” I yell. I’m attempting to haul out the old sheetrock, but it’s heavy as hell.
GG was on board for allowing Easton to get the lodge up to code. But after that, she insisted we pay for everything, which means a lot of freaking manual labor on our part.
“Locket?” Easton bellows, and I realize I really might lose my shit.
“I’m outside,” I scream just as Colton steps through the door with a pretty brunette. “Er, sorry?”
Colton laughs and wraps me in a hug. “No worries, Lexi-con. I want you to meet Rylan. She’s been my best friend since we were in diapers, but she’s been in London for freaking years. She finally came home and agreed to come help out for the summer since she hadn’t lined up work yet.”
“Excuse my overly excitable BFF.” The girl laughs. “I’m Rylan.”
I think I’m going to like this girl.
After wiping my hands on my shorts, I shake her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Lexi, even though this Neanderthal insists on calling me Lexi-con.”
“Whatever, Lexi-con. Have you seen Halton? He disappeared, and I haven’t been able to find him. I’m sure he’ll want to say hello to Rylan.”
I was standing right here when he hauled ass out the back door like he saw a ghost, but something in Rylan’s expression makes me keep that information to myself.
“No, uh, I haven’t seen him,” I lie. However, when Rylan expels a lung full of air in relief, I make a mental note to keep an eye on her.
“Lexi?”
“Jesus Christ, Easton. I’m outside,” I’m yelling as he steps into my line of fire.
“No need to yell, Locket. I’m right here.” He smirks.
“Ugh. You guys all piss me off, you know that? I cannot take living in a thousand square feet with you assholes for much longer. We need to get this lodge fixed, or I’m moving in with Seth.”
“Not fucking happening, Locket.”
Colton ping-pongs between us, but for once he remains quiet. His shit-eating grin says enough.
“That’s what I came out here to tell you,” Easton begins.
