“Don’t move.”
She raises her eyebrow with a sexy grin, and I turn away as quickly as I can. I don’t know when she turned into such a freaking temptress, but I have to keep my wits.
“Colton loved her first.”My spine stiffens at the memory. Well, that’s one way to deflate a boner.
“Hatty? Are you all right?”
“Hmm?” I can’t turn and look at her yet. Not until I can put a lid on whatever this feeling is I’m having.
“Look at me.”
“Hold on, I just—”
“Hatty? Look at me.” Her voice is more demanding this time.
Shaking my head, I do as she asks. The determination in her expression is almost my undoing.
“What were you just thinking about?”
“How unfair life can be sometimes. Nothing to worry about.”
I bend down to hide my face and dig through the sack I know holds the first aid kit. I spend more time than necessary, so I can calm my bodily reaction to her.
She’s not just ‘her,’ Halton. She’s ‘the one’.My spine tingles hearing GG’s voice. Now I’m convinced she hexed me with that wine. After rolling my tense shoulders a few times, I pick up the first aid kit and hobble back to Rylan.
My damn hamstring is sorer than I thought.
Sitting next to her, I point to her foot, which she lifts and sets in my lap. My hand rests on her shin like it’s the most natural thing in the world. In another life, it would have been.
As gently as possible, I feel around her delicate bones, noting the inflammation around her ankle.
“Can you flex your foot, sweetheart?”
Fuck. I need to stop calling her that.
“Yeah, it only hurts a little. Honestly, I think I was more scared than anything.”
My chest tightens. I hate that she was scared, but I’m thankful she isn’t in too much pain.
“That’s good. It doesn’t look too bad, actually. We’ll put some ice on it, and it should be good to go in a couple of days.”
Reaching into the kit, I grab an ice pack that I crack open, then shake to activate. I roll the ace bandage around her ankle once, place the icepack on the swollen area, and secure it with the remaining bandage.
“That should be good for a bit. Climb into the sleeping bag, and I’ll get you some Advil. I think it’s all we have in the kit, but it should help.”
“Hatty! You said I could look at your leg.”
“I never agreed. I’m fine. I’ll take some Advil, too. Oh, but we should eat. Otherwise, you might get an upset stomach. I bought some BLTs for lunch, but they’re probably a little soggy now. Let me see what else I can find.”
She stops me with a delicate hand on my wrist. My gaze stays locked on the connection. How can a simple touch light up my body like this? Her damn sunbeam shoots straight through her fingertips and warms my chest.
A once in a lifetime connection.
“Soggy BLTs are my favorite, Hatty.” Her melodic voice draws my soul to her, but I slowly drag my body away anyway.
Still, I grin because I know her words are true. Not the soggy part, but BLTs were always our thing. Or one of them.
At least I still know something about her.
